Smothers Brothers mark their CBS firing 50 years ago

It wasn't just the moon landing that's being marked this year. For those who weren't around back then, the story behind why CBS cancelled one of the biggest shows on the network is still astounding. And it was that rarest of creatures - a completely counterculture program airing on a staid U.S. conservative network.

Re: Smothers Brothers mark their CBS firing 50 years ago

When the Smothers Brothers premiered in the Sunday 9PM timeslot in Jan 1967, it gave CBS some ratings traction against then NBC powerhouse Bonanza. For years, that timeslot was a blackhole for the eye network. They tried Judy Garland, Joey Bishop, Garry Moore, Twilight Zone, Perry Mason. The Cartwrights easily shot them all down. The Smothers Brothers ranked 16th, 18th and 27th in their three seasons. In season two, the show actually knocked Bonanza from 1st to a three way tie for 4th.
