Ex-Top 40 AM Going Silent Sunday, But Should It Be Saved For This?

For 73 years, KLIV-AM has been a radio fixture in San Jose, California. It won’t make it to 74. The onetime Top 40 market leader is a shadow of its former self, now with a Classic Country format.

But that all ends at 11:59 Pacific Time Sunday, when the station goes silent. But the question remains: is it silent for good or just for now? The 97-year-old owner of the place received only one lowball bid from a buyer and now he wants to donate the entire thing to the local government, so they can broadcast city council meetings and other public events. (An unspecified type of music would fill the rest of the day.)

It’s an intriguing idea to save at least one signal on a dying AM band, but would anyone listen to such a thing? And can you imagine if someone tried that with the current crowd at Toronto City Hall? If you think debates in council are too long and ego driven now, imagine what the 25 loudmouths would do knowing they were on the radio every day, their every word being sent into the ether. Ratings would undoubtedly be lower than TSN 1050. And that’s hard to achieve!

While it’s sad to see another longtime AM outlet disappear, perhaps given the alternative, silence really is golden!

San Jose’s KLIV going silent after 73 years — for now

An idea for CKNT?     It would be Mississauga's city council, but still...

Funny you would say that.

I seem to remember way back in the fringes of my fading memory that they were planning to carry Mississauga City Hall meetings as part of their pitch to the CRTC. Wonder whatever happened to that?

[Edit] I decided to look up the archived decision issued in 2011. Here's what it said:

"The station would provide Mississauga residents with local news and information, including coverage of city council, local business issues, and community related political and social events. The station would also provide sports, weather and traffic, as well as a community forum for public discourse and debate during its mid-morning program Mississauga Voices."

Don't recall ever hearing anything called "Mississauga Voices" in mid-morning.

The owner is not likely being altruistic.  The tax write-off from a donation is likely more than his low ball offer.

- Not an industry person.  Just a guy with a love of Toronto radio.

Another one bites the dust...

WAIK 1590 Galesburg IL has gone off for good ... (DX listeners have confirmed this). 500 watts daytime, 55 at night, oldies...

"Likely more" only if the tax filing happens while IRS auditors are off the job during another government shut down
