The Competition Tribunal has hit Rogers with a substantial fine after what it ruled was misleading advertising about its "Infinite" wireless phone plan.
"The Competition Bureau filed an application with the Competition Tribunal in December 2024, alleging that Rogers ads created the false or misleading impression that the plans offer limitless data when in reality service is severely throttled once a data cap is reached."
Rogers denies the allegations and needless to say, is not happy about the fine. In a statement, it vowed to respond to the harsh penalty.
"These plans are commonplace in the industry and reflected a significant and positive development for consumers and small businesses...We stand behind our advertising and are considering next steps.”
Rogers ordered to pay $15 million over marketing of ‘Infinite’ wireless plans

I have to stick up for Rogers only because...at least in my case, when I called to complain about the slowing down or freezing/useless data access, they upped my data level at no extra charge.
Problem is, now I have waaaaay too much data. I want to drop to a much lower level but they say if I do so, I will lose my current discount and it will actually cost me more as a more expensive phone plan.
It's rare that I ever go over 5gb, so 10GB is good enough for me, but somehow I ended up with 175GB.
Waaaaay too much data, but with a lower bill, so it's hard to complain.

I have 200gb of data and I rarely go over 20 and yes when they upped my data my bill actually went down a few bucks.

Just shows how cheap data usually is. I would venture to say that over 50% of users in major areas are on wifi most of the time

A few years ago I had 250 MB of data just for "emergencies" for an extra $4/month.
Two years later, on getting a new phone and plan, the same provider included 50 GB for the same price.
I'm not sure what changed on the provider side that made data so cheap, but I never have to worry about finding public Wi-Fi any more.

Part of the reason why I use less data is because, when I am home my phone automatically switches to my Rogers home Wifi (Xfinity home internet) for internet use instead of data usage.
This saves a lot of data usage.
