Song You Never Heard Of Sets Billboard Record For Longest Time At #1

The song is called “Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley. And no, I’ve never heard of it or her, either. But someone has.

It’s officially become the longest song to ever spend #1 on the Billboard charts – a record 24 weeks. It breaks the mark held by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” which hit the top spot for a combined 22 weeks. (Although with Christmas just a few months away, it could wind up back at the top.)

“How can a record-breaker also be a track that people insist they’ve never encountered? These dismissive reactions are becoming more common as old mainstream unifiers like radio and television lose their power and hits come from a wider range of genres.”

It appears it has something to do with how Billboard now ranks its records, including streaming. More about how this happened in the linked article.

‘Choosin’ Texas’ is the biggest No. 1 song ever—and you might have never heard it

I am not surprised this song is a worldwide hit, however a bit surprised it is so big and for so long on  mainstream charts. Choosin' Texas is a very country song.  I like the simplicity of the video and the song itself, the lyrics are uncomplicated and universal.   Kind of hokey, yes but hokey sells and is popular.

In Ottawa and the Valley, Stingray's Hot 89.9 plays this all the time, and I sometimes hear my next door neighbour at the office playing this and another current hit, Stella Lefty's "Boston". Not the only time that Hot has had a popular country-ish song getting lots of airplay... "I Had Some Help" by Post Malone and Morgan Wallen was heard often not long ago, along with another Wallen hit, "Love Somebody".

My job requires me to listen to music…was it possible that a song that had been number one on Billboard for almost half a year [had] not graced my ears?” the Canadian journalist and broadcaster Alan Cross wondered.

Alan's either lying to get quoted, or he's very bad at his job.

Or both.

I can see this being a very popular song in country circles, but on the mainstream charts? Nice as it is, I can't imagine CHUM-FM or 99.9 playing this, but I suppose stranger things have happened.

It's currently the 6th most played song on Virgin and 19th on CHUM

However, there was apparent stigma at first for Virgin who didn't really jump on it until it well after it began to hit.
Interesting since just a couple years ago their playlist featured a ton of country/pop tunes.

Choosin' Texas has been on Country radio for months before it became a mainstream hit.

It's longest consecutive streak at #1 was 14 weeks. It  first rose to the top of the Hot 100 on February 14. Since then it has been dethroned six times. It returned to #1 this week for #25.

The song was on multiple formats during the summer e-skips which is when I first heard it. Another song which I heard a lot during the DX season was Olivia Rodrigo's Drop Dead and I liked that one better.
