CFRB Signal Disappears From 1010

It happened at around 11:40 Tuesday morning. Jerry Agar was in mid-sentence when the signal on 1010 suddenly went out. First, there was carrier there. Then it completely disappeared. Now the carrier is back but the program is still missing.

You don't usually hear this on 1010, which has a pretty reliable output. Not sure how long it might last, but the online stream is fine.

After the 11:45 AM break, Agar came on and acknowledged the outage, saying the transmitter refuses to work in this heat - and thanked 'fellow streamers' for staying with him online.

By the way, you can tell when someone is a real radio nut when they listen to static just to see how long it will be before they get it back up and running. Guilty as charged!

I caught that as well, still down at 11:50am but they’re still online. I think this is the first time I have heard 1010 go off the air, and right before the listeners phone in jokes about the heat….!

If the problem is out at the TX, it could be a long silence while they get somebody out there. According to Wikipedia, it's located at Royal Windsor Drive in Mississauga.

I did not notice anything wrong on FM 99.9 HD2, until Jerry Agar mentioned it on air.

Re: CFRB Signal Disappears From 1010

That's probably because CKFM is unaffected by the outage and the signal is piggybacked on the FM, so it stays on. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at engineering right now.

Back on at 12:44 PM, after over an hour off the air.

Good Gawd! Someone actually went out in this heat and fixed the problem?

In radio, if you want a raise, management puts you in the building's elevator and pushes the "Up" button.

And that's often the only raise you get!

That does take a certain level of dedication.

Re: CFRB Signal Disappears From 1010

I wondered for a second if Bell had closed the station without warning.

1050 was down yesterday too, around 5:30pm. Checked in again around 5:45 and was still down.

That thought does often cross one's mind in these circles when an AM station goes off the air for a prolonged period of time.

Re: CFRB Signal Disappears From 1010

Back around 1970ish, CFRB was off for about 10 minutes during the Wally Crouter show. It was daylight, so no WINS. It was nice to hear WCFL splatter free though.

Re: CFRB Signal Disappears From 1010

Both 1010 and 1050 probably have modern solid state (no tubes) transmitters. These units tend to be very reliable but don't like heat. Some transmitter shacks have air conditioning to keep the equipment cool but a lot of sites do not. The old tube transmitters took the heat in stride not so much with solid state units. I wonder if this was heat related?

Last I saw, 1050 had a 50,000 watt Harris rig, but it wouldn't surprise me if that has since been replaced by a Canadian-made Nautel unit... a radio friend not long ago put in new 50,000 watt Nautels at Bell's Ottawa AMs, 580 CFRA and CFGO "TSN 1200", and he keeps the sites in pristine shape.
