CFRB's latest promotion is for a good cause, but boy, is it early. They're doing a highly hyped "Christmas In July" campaign, asking people to bring in an unwrapped toy for the CHUM Christmas Wish. Normally, they don't trot this campaign out until November or December.
But in the intense heat of a Toronto summer, it's starting very early this year. It kicks off at a City of Vaughan pizza parlor, with generous donors bringing in a toy that will be held for the holiday. Expect a lot of hype on the station as this edges closer to the day - July 16th - with morning host John Moore, Deb Hutton, Jerry Agar and Jim Richards also in attendance. I imagine there will be numerous of cut-ins that day, and the programming may well originate from there, so prepare for that if you listen to 1010.
It's a good cause in the end, but to me, it's way too early to pull out this old chestnut. That said, I wish them a lot of success.

They should have done this on June 25th, with a half Christmas tree and half decorations, all while singing half Christmas songs, reminding people we're half way to Christmas...oh but does that mean people only make half donations? ...D'oh! Never mind! Nothing to read here!
Seriously though, many years ago, the half Christmas gathering was a Humble and Fred thing back in their CFNY days...

We are in the middle of a heat wave! The furthest thing from my mind is Christmas.

Which is exactly the problem with this kind of promotion at this time of year.

Every year, on a Wednesday in late June, CP24 does a remote from Flemingdon Golf Course with Bill Coulter, some others, and a guy in a Santa suit, to kick off the promotion. Not a new thing.

First time I've heard it on CFRB - and they're devoting an entire day to it, no less. (Thursday, July 16th.)

But again, like I said, June 25th was once the earliest mention of Christmas on the radio.
It was half way to Christmas and Humble & Fred sang half Christmas songs, gathered around a half Christmas tree, half decorated at a get together with CFNY fans.
CFNY listeners showed up, but I have no idea if they donated half toys or whatever... ![]()

I don't like to think about Christmas or hear seasonal music until mid December. In a perfect world, I would hear Christmas music December 24th, 25th and then it vanishes.

Although I do agree that it's good to start playing Christmas music 24/7 right after (or during) a Santa Claus Parade, I still stress that any time before November 12th is too early.
Let November 11th be November 11th. If you don't remember that day, shame on you!
