And I thought the NFL and golf went on for way too long.
Next week is July 4th, the annual celebration of American Independence Day and the 250th birthday of that nation. And ABC is trying something no one has ever seen before - a program that goes on for over 24 hours straight. Exactly how the network plans to run a show that goes on that long still isn't clear and neither is exactly who they expect to watch it.
The show, called "Disney Celebrates America" (Disney owns the network), starts at 8 PM July 3rd and goes on and on and on and on until 11 PM the following night. (And there's even a speicial on June 29th, if you want a preview.) It will also air on the company's other properties, including Disney+ and ESPN. I'm sure sports fans will be thrilled to have thair regular programming interrupted by this thing.
I doubt many Canadians will want to watch all that much of it, if any, except maybe out of curiosity - how in the world do you run a single program on a single subject for that long?
Yes, there have been telethons that have lasted 24 hours, but they weren't a network TV show and this isn't a fundraiser. I'm curious to see how they fill all that airtime. But probably not curious enough to actually watch it.

I can see a two or three hours special on this, but over 24 hours seems like a stunt. Yes, I’m sure Disney has loads of material to draw from, but like RA mentioned, who do they expect t to watch it? I think most people in the US will have better things to do on the 4th than watch TV, hopefully! Don’t think I’ll be tuning in….

I would imagine the program is meant to be for the viewer to drop in and out over the 24+ hours. Also it really isn't one single subject. They will have many historical stories, events and personalities tied into the 250th to keep the show interesting. Sounds like there will be reporting and highlights from all 50 states. I am glad ABC and Disney is doing this. I was a bit disappointed so far what has been on TV for the big anniversary. Other than maybe the Brits, the US is the best at throwing a party.
Happy 250th to our American friends! And many more to come!

One of the events to be televised is Nathan's hotdog eating contest.

It's not quite as spectacular as ABC's 24 hour long special, but NBC also has something up its sleeve for the 4th of July - even though it takes place a day later. For the first time in history, a TV network will show every single Major League Baseball game at once, with 15 broadcast either at the same time or on the same day, including the Jays in Seattle.
There will also be an enriched screen where viewers can keep track of four games at once if they choose.
Unfortunately, we won't be able to see most of them. The baseball extravaganza will only be available on Peacock, which Canadians can't subscribe to. (Although the Jays game will be on Sportsnet, as usual.) Viewers can still see two games on the main NBC network. It will be showing the Mets vs. the Braves in the afternoon and in primetime, the Padres against the Dodgers.

ABC is way ahead of NBC, FOX and CBS in celebrating America's 250th. Both the CBS and NBC affiliates in Detroit have a surprising amount of regular programming today on their stations. The sad thing is a lot of it will be infomercials. And NBC with Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Protecting The Wild at 12noon AND 1:30?? Later this afternoon only ABC is sticking with the special programming, all the others have sports, mostly golf. FOX really has the best excuse since they are official broadcaster in the US for the World Cup...GO CANADA!!
