CJBQ Celebrates 80 Years On Air In A Big Way

The Belleville station will officially turn 80 on  August 12th, and in the lead up to the milestone, it's assembled an amazing collection of material on its website. There's audio from the past, as well an extensive series of articles and photo memorabilia from the last eight decades. (Clicking on each picture leads to dozens more of them.)

The outlet is also looking for audio remembrances from anyone who worked there, which will be posted online.

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating - I wish more stations would mark these moments on air and on the web. It's a great way to connect the past with the present - on the road to the future.

And there's some great stuff in their archives.

CJBQ Celebrates 80 Years

Re: CJBQ Celebrates 80 Years On Air In A Big Way

I lived through my adolescent and teen years in Carrying Place, just to the southwest of Trenton. CJBQ was the main radio station in the area, Toronto stations were scratchy during the day, non existent at night. The big U.S. stations were the night choice for me, WCFL being my favourite. Timeframe was 1967 through 1974, age 11 to 18.

Carrying Place is where co-owned CJTN Trenton had its transmitter site during the AM years (1979-2004); two of the three towers were still standing when I last drove by the site a couple of years ago.

Did my college internship at Quinte Broadcasting in 2003, and that included a handful of overnights on CJBQ but was mostly on the FM side, doing on-air shifts on Mix 97. 'BQ was also still running an AM stereo signal at the time, and one of my profs at Loyalist had a Chrysler vehicle that could pick up AM stereo - and it sounded quite good!

Also worth noting is that the building at CJBQ's previous transmitter site near Mountain View is still there, though hidden behind lots of foliage; the present site near Hillier signed on in 1970.

And here's a pic of him in the CJBQ control room.

CJBQ is a great example of local radio. In my opinion it shows how AM can be successful when the programming is entertaining and compelling. I often listen to Freddy Vette and there seems to be no shortage of local sponsors that value the demographic that Vette's show appeals to. You will hear ads from car dealers, landscapers, funeral homes, denture makers, retirement homes, appliances, renovators, travel agencies, restaurants etc. I wish CJBQ many more years of success.

I have been listening to WKRP for the last week or so. All their ads are from local Ohio/Kentucky business's. All are extremely polished and professional. CFOS is another station with many local ads. Whether you broadcast on AM or FM, if your station's sales team can get the majority of your ad revenue from vendors within your coverage area, you have lots of listeners.

Re: CJBQ Celebrates 80 Years On Air In A Big Way

I continue to be amazed about the station's frequency. There are no less than three very powerful stations occupying the 800 position on the AM dial around Ontario and Quebec - CKLW, CJBQ and CJAD. I sometimes wonder how they all exist so relatively close to each other.

CKLW is a 50K blowtorch, mostly aimed at the U.S., CJAD is also 50,000 watts daytime but drops to 10K at night. And CJBQ is 10,000 watts fulltime. How they don't interfere wth each other after dark is incredible to me, even with highly directional patterns.

Re: CJBQ Celebrates 80 Years On Air In A Big Way

Because of the eastern null, CKLW has an extremely weak, if it all, signal in the GTA. WJR with no null can be heard during the day here depending on electrical interference on the quality of your radio. CJAD has an extreme nighttime null to the west. CJBQ's night nulls go both east and west, but the primary local coverage area is still served.

Then there is the nighttime skywave signal blasted out by PJB3, a Trans World Radio station transmitting Christian-based content on 800 with 440,000 watts.
