CFL's New Deal With Bell, DAZN & YouTube Worth $500 Million

The games will remain on TSN, with DAZN offering a Saturday match, and YouTube getting some pre-season games not shown on the other two services.

Sill no word on where or if the league will be seen in the U.S., where its deal with CBS ends at the end of the coming season.

CFL signs 6-year broadcast agreement with Bell Media, DAZN and YouTube for reported $500 million

So fans will loose Saturday night games on TSN unless they fork over $25/mth to DAZN. How many will follow?
For me, I rarely get to see TFC games now because most are on Apple TV. So I don't follow them any more.
Money is tight these days. Making fans pay more is not wise.

TFC is still a thing?

The CFL is playing with fire. I am a fan, started when I lived out West, but will not sign up for DAZN just to watch Saturday night games, sorry. In a way I feel like I’m paying already as cable isn’t free.

It also surprised me that TSN currently pays $50M per annum to the CFL, especially when the viewership is low in some markets, like Toronto. Must make up for it with Western markets! And I also haven’t watched a TFC game in a couple of years, used to!

DAZN has a substantial existing fan base among younger audiences, particularly for MMA and NFL coverage. This deal brings CFL content to a younger, more connected global audience and gives the league a significant financial shot in the arm when combined with the new Bellmedia arrangement. Win-win as far as I can see, particularly for the players, who’ll be arguing for some of that new cash to show up in salaries when they negotiate the upcoming CBA.

Overall ratings for the CFL on TSN have been resilient and in the case of the playoffs and Grey Cup growing.  The matches on CTV have helped too.  This sounds like a good deal for the CFL and keeps TSN/RDS as a major outlet for the league.  I wonder how many games are simulcast with TSN on CTV or are they just carrying The Grey Cup?  I hope it includes some regular season play on the OTA network but the article didn't really say.

Young people don't watch the CFL. That train left the station a long time ago.

That doesn't mean they never will.  Young people also never use play pickelball...but they are now..

Agreed.... I really don't see how they can save this league beyond making it a farm league for the NFL

Personally, I think it was a huge mistake Americanizing the game by eliminating the 55 yardline and shrinking the end zone from 20yards to 10.

I’ve been hearing about the demise of the CFL for many decades now. Yet, here we are, and the league has seen off challenges from a host of would-be football competitors (WFL, XFL, WLAF, and soon the UFL) and is still standing with a new broadcast deal and renewed interest in domestic expansion. As for the rule changes, I’m withholding judgement until we see how things play out next season.
