A Constant Radio Ad Irritant Finally Admits How Annoying It Is

If you're like most people, you're probably sick of hearing that "1-800-Kars4Kids" jingle that's not only an earworm but to some, absolute audio torture.

For the first time in years, those behind the campaign appear to be admitting how irritating it is. I heard a new version on CFRB Monday morning where those familiar few intro notes started to play, before being interrupted by a voice. It says, "Hey wait, Before you change the station..." and then a new more rock and roll version of the thing plays. (P.S.: It's no better.)

That's the first time I've ever heard an advertiser admit their spot makes people flee somewhere else. Radio stations that want increased hours tuned should probably take note. But hey, at least the advertiser is being honest for a change. But it doesn't make the commercial any easier to listen to.

I actually like the original Kars4Kids jingle the way it is.
The new version belongs on Q 107 & other rock stations. NOT on AC stations etc.
As for talk radio, well, I just don't know what to think...

Tom of Tom's Place did it in a spot on CJRT. Essentially admitting some people tell him he talks too much. And he deliberately talked too much to convey what could have been said in just a few words. Love it or loathe it, it's his schtick. I recently bought a suit there but have never met the man. But I have a feeling the ad presents his authentic self. Which, if that's the case, is a positive, in my books.

I noticed that too.
I wonder if radio stations were getting calls from being saying they change the channel when that old ad played.
I also notice Spence has not used that horrible scream for some time now.

Don't particularly like the new version any more than the old one, but I do like the kid on the drums! He's a hoot to watch. But I still won't donate my car.

Re: A Constant Radio Ad Irritant Finally Admits How Annoying It Is

I don't find either of those ads to be particularly annoying, although I don't listen to terrestrial radio as much as some posters on this board, so maybe I'm not getting the full breadth of how annoying these spots can be upon repeated listenings.

I can tell you though, the one series of TV commercials that I find excruciatingly intolerable are the ones for those gummi bears where they have grown adults talking in toddler-like voices. Not that I'm really into them (mostly because they stick to your teeth too much), but if I did, these ads would turn me right off this brand.

There's a current "Roto-Rooter" radio spot running where the commercial voiceover "host" keeps throwing to a single line of the Roto-Rooter jingle. They play it over, and over, and over, and over and he says something about how catchy and long-standing that jingle has been. It doesn't quite meet your criteria of an advertiser saying their spot makes people go elsewhere, but the ad is definitely playing on the annoyance factor of hammering it home again and again in such a short duration.

I prefer the classical version:

Re: A Constant Radio Ad Irritant Finally Admits How Annoying It Is

In the past year or so I read a piece about how Kars for Kids were aware their commercial annoyed many but were not going to change it as it gets attention, so I’m surprised they changed it. I wonder what size buys they make as they seem to be in every commercial break!
