Every January these two words together are guaranteed to heighten the cortisol levels of human beings if they're unfortunate enough to have to listen to broadcasters talk about this particular Monday being absolutely dreadful and depressing. And the reasons why it's dreadful and depressing.
Of all the years in recent memory, with everything that's going on in the world right now, we really don't need an official day to feel bad.
Why the heck don't media folks focus on the origin of "Blue Monday", a marketing ploy by a travel agency to increase sales, and do useful news features: how to effectively deal with SAD, ways to tackle the amount owed on a credit card after a holiday splurge, Toronto events to look forward to, great tv shows and series that are available that maybe aren't getting as much attention as Heated Rivalry.
Even asking listeners to call in and share how they are coping could be positive.
I didn't listen to all of Moore In the Morning this morning but early in the show I heard John announce it was "Blue Monday" and while he wasn't particularly doom and gloom about it, I was surprised he and moore, pun intended, on-air folks I heard throughout the day on the radio didn't share the origin story for "Blue Monday " and use the opportunity to debunk it while still acknowledging it can be a challenging time of the year to get through.
Mindset is everything and broadcasters being on autopilot dredging up the "Blue Monday" story every year doesn't serve the public and does them a disservice.
It's still afternoon so hopefully there might just be a few radio and television folks who will come through for their listeners/viewers with an accurate look at "Blue Monday."

Wednesday is Bell "Let's Talk Day," so there will be plenty of chatter on both CFRB and other Bell Media properties about mental health.

I have always hated this Blue Monday story.
It's a gimmick thought up by some bogus pop psychology flim-flam artist.
It's got RFK Jr. and Doctor Oz written all over it.
I have never done a story on it.
I never would.
But every year so-called respectable journalists cover it.
Enough already.
Like Betaylored I would like to see stories about debunking Blue Monday.

Well at least it gives oldies stations an excuse to play the Fat Man. I'm betting this appeared on AM740 at some point during the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if one or both of CFNY and CIND played New Order's "Blue Monday" today. I don't think that CJYE or CJMR would have played it if they were still on 1250 and 1320.

Just looked it up, and you're correct; they both did.

I'd like paraprogramming that would make plain that 'blue monday' is nonsense, and focus on the main theme - BLUE. All variations of Blue Moon, Blue Velvet; That Joni Mitchell record; recollections of Blue Man Group. an oral history of Blue Valentine. And so on.

Don't stop at oldies stations. Sounds like that track also makes for a good bed for talk radio stations...

Michael Savage used it for years every Monday.
