A veteran radio consultant looks at the year ahead for the medium and makes a number of suggestions. But one of them stands out to me - the endless paring of actual live voices on the air.
"The industry has to stop laying off personnel NOW! You’re hurting yourself more than you realize. When you let go of air talent from the station and replace it with a jukebox, there’s no difference between you and the streaming services. What’s the reason for your audience to listen to you? You have no differentiator — nothing separating you from the noise. Good luck with that!"
The bean counters won't likely listen, of course, but amen, brother!

"Stop laying off personnel NOW!"?
A little late for that, dontcha think? Kind of like locking up the barn door after the cows have run off. ![]()

Actually, substitute that with horses. I don't think cows can run very fast. ![]()

Gary is saying what a few of us have been preaching for years on SOWNY. It's all basic stuff and just common sense. Why try to compete with streamers? Nice to read an article from a consultant who has finally seen the light...![]()

I recently asked a number of early 20 something employees at the grocery store where I work if they ever listen to radio. Nope was the unanimous answer. News and weather they can get on their phones. None own a vehicle so public transit is how they get to and from work. The big reason is the music. They all have their own playlists. They can listen to what they want when they want. How can radio compete with that attitude?
