This isn't local, and I'm not sure if this kind of thing applies to many stations in this area, but I found this letter to Radio World about FM "short spacing" really interesting. In essence, it happens when two stations on the same frequency that are uncomfortably close to each other wind up causing interference for both of them.
The only ones I can think of here locally may be WGRF and CKHC-FM (aka Radio Humber.) Despite the fact the latter is very weak, I sometimes find the two stations competing with each other on 96.9. The same thing happens in my location with CFZM-FM (the low power rebroadcaster of AM740 in Toronto) and CHYM-FM Kitchener, both at 96.7. I often get one, only to find the other suddenly replacing it and vice versa.

CKIS 92.5 Toronto and WBEE 92.5 Rochester. And since they're both HD, the switch in instantaneous.
CKFG 98.7 Toronto and CBC 98.7 Peterborough can fight it out too.

Another one in SOWNY region is on 95.9 FM in Erie, PA. CFPL-FM (aka FM96) blasts across Lake Erie from London, and for decades was the only station on that frequency in Erie. Then in 2006, a religious LP station signed on in Erie, WXNM-LP. And then 11 years after that, another station signed on that frequency from Mina, NY - WJRK (now WEBG), which simulcasts WFNN 1130 in Erie. WXNM has since closed down but for a period of time there were 3 stations on 95.9 that reached Erie.

I was always a bit surprised that WYRK Buffalo and the now silent CFPT on 106.5 in Toronto didn't interfere with each other more, but I'm guessing those farther away from the GTA may have had issues with the two signals.

I thought Canada & USA made a hand shake "Not on my soil" deal, meaning that two separate stations can operate on 106.5 on both the Canadian and American side as long as each station does not touch each other's soil when both stations are in operation...? (something like that)

The Grand and WBUF battle on 92.9 all over the GTA with neither station dominating.

In Oakville, where most of the Buffalo FM's are reasonably clear, WYRK only came in under tropo conditions. Now it has a very reliable signal in Toronto.

105.5fm CHRY and it's Uxbridge counterpart overlap.
Even the Icon Logo in the car reception can't decide which to use while driving through North GTA/Vaughan area on Wednesday fyi.
