CFTO Would Never Do This

I was watching the SNF Patriots/Ravens game on WNBC last night and the game ran late until 11:30. I ended up watching the local NBC4 news which followed. The newscast had a complete weather and sportscast around midnight. An actual weather presenter gave a detailed five day forecast and no it is highly unlikely NYC will have a 2025 White Christmas. What followed was a comprehensive sports report with hilights of how the local NFL, NHL and NBA teams fared. Both WCBS and WABC have full time weather and sports reports on their local newscasts who are proudly mentioned in the newscast intro. Compare that to what passes for a newscast at Toronto's supposed #1 Newscast in Canada's #1 market. If CFTO's supper hour newscast is still #1, it is likely viewers watch because they have always watched for decades and aren't willing to break tradition. Bell is counting on that. They have the money to put out a quality product. They continually choose not to. To be honest, I am guilty here. I have always watched CFTO News. I have never really watched CITY, CBLT, Global or CHCH. I have seen snipets of their newscasts but I always return to the old comfortable shoe, CFTO.  Why? Force of habit mostly.

Bell has become huge penny pinchers of late and it shows in their media products, both TV & radio. I still watch news but have no real loyalties anymore, I used to watch City’s news for local info, as they once had our city really covered, pre-Rogers of course, but rarely tune in these days. I find Global’s news fairly comprehensive and a decent balance of local and international news. But let’s face it, we now can get our news from anywhere, anytime!

News as it happens (or about to happen) is key.

I also find myself watching Global News more and more.  I like their National cast with Dawna Friesein.  Her year end interview with Pierre Poilievre was excellent.  I only get CTV Toronto news through CP24 when they simulcast, but don't watch that much.  However the late night package when I have tuned in tends to be sloppy technically.  CTV Kitchener and London newscasts are alright but don't have anything during the weekend which is too bad.

Re: CFTO Would Never Do This

Comparing Canadian local newscasts to those by American stations is a pointless argument. I agree most of our local news is sloppy, but Canadian local stations don't get subscription revenue, meaning our stations obtain only half of potential revenue compared to their US counterparts. The corners have to be cut somewhere. Add to that..... if you're #1, and as you say "people watch no matter what," why not water your product down? Nobody cares.

Re: CFTO Would Never Do This

Last numbers I saw, and they’re quite dated now; WNBC had more revenue than CTV and its affiliates combined.

I watch CHCH news on the weekends since CTV London and CTV Kitchener’s weekend newscasts were cancelled and I do find CHCH’s newscast and weekend newscasts well produced then CTV London’s weekend newscasts.

Re: CFTO Would Never Do This

It's Global for me on weekends, just the 6 pm broadcast, as they include the Sault Ste Marie to North Bay to Ottawa corridor in the weather forecasts, and who doesn't like looking at Noor Ra'fatt ?  Weekdays, I flick between CTV North Ontario and Barrie's CTV2.

Their studio is in Sudbury. But they have local reporters in almost every city in the north.

Re: CFTO Would Never Do This

Yes, on Frood Road in  Sudbury, with reporters in the Sault, Timmins and North Bay.  CTV shares the building with a country FM at 91.7 .

Thank You. I was going to guess Sudbury, North Bay or Sault St. Marie.
