I remember, even before the days of social media, people calling our newsroom and leaving comments on the female anchor's appearance. They criticized what she was wearing, how she talked, her make-up, her weight, her hairstyle and a whole lot of stuff that had nothing to do with her ability as a reporter or anchor.

I always felt bad when idiots would bother to phone in about this, leaving our receptionist to take down the gist of the comments.

They rarely called to say anything about her male counterpart. 

Fast forward many years and here we are in the age of TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook, Reddit and way too many more sites to mention. And if anything, things are even worse, as people hide behind their anonymity to make crude, sexist and stupid comments no one would say to someone's face. 

Enter Corissa Cordel with KOLR-TV in Missouri. She's a slightly pulchritudinous anchor, who has taken a page from Jimmy Kimmel's "Mean Tweets" segment, and is now reading the comments online in a professional announcer's voice, to make fun of those making fun of her. Her entries have immediately gone viral as she turns the tables on her critics.  

"Codel said she draws a clear line between comments that are funny and those that are just plain cruel. While many of the remarks she features are playfully exaggerated, flirtatious, or absurd in tone, not all of them come from a place of lightheartedness.

“It doesn’t affect me at all. I think that they’re hilarious,” she explained. “I don’t put up the extremely mean ones, but I like the insults that are very creative.”

Good for her for taking the high road while the posters are travelling the lowest of the low. You can see some of her videos at the link below.
