OK, maybe not fair, and while the Globe takes note that on-air talent isn't affected, I noticed this sentence in the Star story:
"Four news management positions in Toronto are among the impacted roles."
So where could those be? Does Bell have any other news managers except at CFTO, CP24 and maybe CTV National News? There's no news director that I know of at CFRB - they barely have anything but headlines anymore. Where do you suppose these unfortunate managers (and I do feel bad for them) come from?

Sandi Rinaldo on CTV National News @ 5:30 reported “it was a difficult day at CTV News”. She went on to day Bell…laid off - 4 long time colleauges. She also said there were 40 layoffs at Bell media - non-unionized.

It's not just Bell right sizing/downsizing...whatever the politically correct term is these days. Many companies are doing this in small numbers so that they don't meet the threshold for official government reporting. I understand that it's always about the money and the competition but, personally, I believe we are losing our humanity in the way companies are allowed to operate. All that is being done is to squeeze more out of each employee as MBA types run the corporate show. Many of them don't even understand the business or how to grow it...they mainly focus on how to cut costs because that is more easy route.
A good example is the amount of time we spend waiting on hold for customer service. The bots companies are using certainly reduce their costs...but it's at the expense of the customer who wastes many hours on hold because the bot is incapable of handling unique scenarios.

Back in the 80's/90's, I believe the appropriate term was " Corporate Restructuring" I vividly remember the first time it happened to me. I was 40 and had been employed for the company for 15.5 years. My supervisor told me to attend a meeting in the boardroom at 1pm. There are about 20 employees in the room from many different departments. I thought none of these people have much in common. Then the company president and head of HR enter the room in their power suits. The president begins with a companies biggest expenditure is labour costs...Then the light went on. We're all getting laid off. After he finished, the HR person passed out our severence packages like he was dealing a deck of cards. My boss felt bad for me, but it was a numbers game. Part of my package was $250 to see a lawyer to discuss my package. I always remember after glancing at the package for maybe two seconds, he told me the company had done their homework. Offered me enough so I wouldn't sue. He said my package was on the low end of fair 8-12 months pay. I got 9. He also said I could get one year, but most of the extra would be eaten up in legal fees. I took the 9 months.. It's funny. today I have a parttime job working at a small independent grocery store. Next February, I will have been there longer than any of my three full time jobs.

I saw the headline and my first thought was: "Uh-oh, even more technical problems at CTV Toronto coming down the road." (their noon newscast already had two video glitches today).
