Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

The 112th Grey Cup was a hit for TSN/RDS/CTV yesterday with an average audience of over 4 million tuning in.  Details from 3 Down Nation...https://3downnation.com/2025/11/17/112th-grey-cup-tv-ratings-up-12-percent-as-saskatchewan-roughriders-beat-montreal-alouettes/

I noticed many audio and video dropouts during the telecast.  I was watching the game on CTV.

Re: Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

Bell boasts that Grey Cup ratings are up 12% from last year. Great! However, they are down almost 2M viewers from 2009. I wonder why? Better NFL games in the 4:25 and 8:20pm time slots? It would be interesting to see the breakdown of Grey Cup ratings by region. I suspect they were strongest in the Prairie Provinces. I also maintain there would be a great deal more interest in the CFL in the GTA If the league hadn't insisted on using their stringest blackout rule. Because Toronto and Hamilton are only 40 miles apart, the 75 mile blackout rule meant that all Argo and TigerCat games were blacked out, including playoffs. Back then CBC and CTV shared the CFL telecasts. The closest CTV affillate was ch 6 in Deseronto and CBC was CHEX in Peterborough. Most people didn't have rotors and reception of ch 12 would have been iffy at best. THAT is how a whole generation was lost to the NFL. it was 1983 before I actually saw a game on television from Ivor Wynne Stadium. I was visiting a friend in Edmonton.

I noticed that as well. Quite annoying.

And the beat goes on to this day. Most here know I'm not a fan of the NFL, mainly because of the endless overruns that delays the programming that follows the games and eats up extra space on my DVR, as I to try to guess when the show I want to see will end.

'Twas ever thus and from the look of these numbers, I'm not going to get any relief anytime soon! The CFL wishes it could make an impact like this.

Nielsen Gauge data shows lift that NFL provides broadcast TV on Sundays

Re: Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

Our Lady Peace would have been better known to the crowd at the stadium and likely those watching on TV.  However the CFL is trying hard to attract younger fans and that's why they brought in Machine Gun Kelly or as he is known now mgk.  His show wasn't bad and they didn't have any audio issues during his performance.

The NFL is so powerful and marketed so well it dominates sports in North America.  Even "the best World Series ever" from a few weeks ago had much lower numbers compared to the Super Bowl.  51 million viewers MLB game 7 compared to 127 million last year for the Super Bowl, in the US.   However the Grey Cup would have been the most watched game in Canada on Sunday.  An average of over 4 million viewers and a total of 10 million Canadians who watched part of the game is very impressive.  I wonder how CBS Sports Network did in the US for ratings?  They carried TSN feed of the game.  The deal with CBS ends next year.

Hopefully next year TSN will have a smoother production.  Normally they do an excellent job on the Grey Cup IMO, but this year was off.

Bill Brioux has some updated numbers for the Grey Cup and other ratings on Sunday.  He mentions when the RDS audience is added in for French coverage, average total viewership for the game should be around 5 million.  From brioux.tv..https://brioux.tv/blog/2025/11/17/sundays-112th-grey-cup-scores-ratings-touchdown-for-tsn/

No sir, it was even worse. 51 million was the Canada+USA+Japan audience. USA only was 26 million for Game 7, meanwhile this year's Super Bowl was 127 million in the U.S.

Re: Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

The Super Bowl has more than twice the viewer numbers the Grey Cup captures in Canada...it's clear the CFL is Canada's maligned yet beloved (in the prairies by rednecks and farmers anyway) B-league...it clings to it's unique Canadian rules and patriotism but everyone knows two things...every CFL player and coach would leave for a solid NFL gig in a millisecond and Toronto 's ship (excuse the Argo pun there) has long set sail on the league...Toronto wants, deserves and would easily support an NFL franchise...but that would basically put a final nail in the CFL being even mentioned as a top tier pro league...The NFL will never come to Toronto as per the deal/gentleman's agreement they have with the CFL...the CFL should become a version of pro-hockey's AHL and feed talent to an affiliated NFL team and Toronto should get an NFL franchise...don't tell me MLSE and their millionaire buddies couldn't scrounge up $4 billion USD for a NFL team and a new stadium...the current Ontario gov't would pave the way in a path of gold interlock as well.

Re: Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

Toronto would never support an NFL team. There is no current venue for football in Toronto and no amount of persuasion would convince taxpayers to cough up the cash to pay for a new billion dollar boondoggle. Previous NFL games here have flopped badly, with people from Rogers lining up on Front Street on game day giving out free tickets just to paper the stadium to appear full. Also, the Buffalo Bills are staying put in WNY and would veto any effort to put a team in Toronto that would cut into their fan base here. The Argos are the victims of neglect from MLSE and years of poor decision-making. But the idea of an NFL franchise in Toronto was never more than a fantasy from a bunch of rich guys who wanted a new toy to play with.

Ridiculous....Toronto wants it's own team not the Buffalo Bills or lame exhibition games...the city would support a team without question...the money would be found if the red tape was removed by the NFL with their bullshyt agreement with the CFL...the gov't would also green light a new stadium in the GTA (see New England Patriots outside of Boston)...the proximity question to Buffalo is also bullshyt...the Baltimore Ravens stadium is 52 km from the Washington Commanders stadium...the population of this area is roughly the same as that of the Greater Toronto, Hamilton and Niagara area...it's league politics and backroom deals keeping the NFL from Toronto....that's all...a properly managed NFL team is a license to print money...it too big to fail.

Johnny, if what you say is true, why hasn’t it happened already? I’m an old man, I’ve been hearing talk about the NFL putting a team in Toronto since the 1970s. It’s never gone beyond the planning stages, even back when several teams were on the brink of bankruptcy south of the border. Given the cost of building a single purpose stadium and blowback Thug Ford is facing from his other pipe dreams (see 401: tunnel underneath), the idea that Ontario taxpayers would be asked to cough up $500-$750 million to pay for a new stadium would be enough to see him sent back to the warehouse at Deco Labels. The only people still talking about the NFL in Toronto are a few diehards. The public has moved on.

Re: Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

It definitely didn't work backwards. Here's the very first time a CFL game was ever broadcast in the U.S. The date: Sat., Aug. 28, 1954.

Re: Grey Cup Ratings Up 12% From Last Year

Those U.S. televised games hopefully would have at some point featured the Rough Riders versus the Roughriders.  Back then, a fair amount of the audience would have figured it out.  With today's troglodytes schooled by Fox, I have my doubts. 🤨
