A Scary Choice On A Scary Night: Halloween Vs. The World Series On TV

If the Blue Jays manage to win even one game in L.A., it could lead to a very scary Friday night - not because of what's on the line, but because Game 6 would fall on Halloween and return to the Dome. I don't happen to have kids, so it won't affect me. But I'm curious - if you have younger children (or grandkids), this creates quite the dilemma.

You want to see the game, especially if the Jays are somehow in the Series lead, but you may also want to go door-to-door with the younger crowd. There's only so much time for both. So what do you do? Go out early (pre-darkness) and get the kids their loot? Miss the early innings and knock on the doors of neighbours, who are presumably also watching the game? Or take a radio or use your phone to listen to what you'll miss on an earbud?

I'm sure Oct. 31st has inserted itself into the World Series in past years, but the Jays weren't involved in those. It's an interesting problem for parents who want to see their kids have a good time, but don't want to miss what could potentially be one of the biggest Blue Jays games in team history.

Maybe it won't come to that if the Jays sweep (or worse, get swept) in L.A. But I don't think that's likely. So talk about a scary night! If this scenario happens, what are you planning to do?

Like you RA, I don't have children. I live in a lowrise apartment building, so nobody comes to my door. Not that I would ever answer it unless I buzzed someone in.

Which leads me to my favourite old joke, as told by the great Lorne Owens on WEBR Buffalo back in the 70s.

Question: What does Roy Rogers give his horse for Halloween?

Answer: A "Trigger" Treat.

It's not that funny, but for some reason, it's stayed with me all these years.

Start knocking on doors at 615pm ET and be back home by 8:05 for the first pitch...that should be enough time for a the wee ones to fill a pillow case with sugar...make sure you hit a well decorated and populated subdivision to get maximum impact...same thing goes for handing candy out....no rule says you have to keep handing it out after 8:05pm either...I know all this from years of experience.

Simple solution: Dress your kid up like a baseball player or BJ Birdie (not ace) all while walking around listening to the game!  (Ace doesn't talk, but BJ birdie did, so BJ can say "Trick or treat")
Problem solved.

Luckily, the time change to EST doesn't happen until this coming Sunday. So it might still be a bit lighter out at 6 PM, although I always thought trick or treating had to be done in the dark - it's spookier.

So this scenario I posed a few days ago has come true. Get ready for a lot of early door knocks, as both the kids and their parents will likely be heading home before 8 PM to divide the candy and watch the Jays in their most important game of the year.

Hopefully, the game will be more treat than trick. Depending on what happens, I suspect the ratings could set a new record.
