Why Is City TV Running A Promo For A CBC TV Show?

I was tuning around stations Monday morning and happened by City TV, catching the tale end of a promo for Murdoch Mysteries. At first, I thought I was mistaken. But no, I went back and the spot was advising viewers that there were new episodes every Monday on the CBC and to be sure to go to the Gem website to watch anything they've missed.

I'm pretty sure Murdoch has not aired on City since 2013. And I get it - a paid ad is a paid ad. But are we really at the point that a TV station will actually accept commercials publicizing a show on the competition? Why would City allow such a spot on their airwaves, essentially saying, "tune us out and tune in someone else?" I don't get it.

CBC gets some promo time on Rogers properties as part of their NHL deal. Maybe it doesn't all have to be in-game, or they weren't able to deliver it all in-game.

OK, but really - in the middle of the Price Is Right? I guess never giving your competitor an advantage is old school thinking.

Somehow I doubt they're doing it for CBC's advantage.

You ever watch Murdoch mysteries?  No ads for Bell or Telus, just non stop ads for Rogers cell and internet services.
Fair deal is fair deal...get people to watch CBC so they can see as many ads for Rogers services as possible.

I think this is part of the contract between Rogers and CBC allowing the Corp to keep Hockey Night in Canada.

Yes it is.

I don't think they get to choose where the spots air though, so that is all up to City.

TPIR may be relatively popular, but weekday daytime viewership is tiny.

I did a little digging and found some Neilsen numbers from Fall 2024. The CBS daytime schedule averaged 3.83M viewers with TPIR [5.38M] and the Y&R [5.09M] leading the way. There are many primetime shows that don't come close to those numbers.

And that is why prime time (other than sports) isn't as important as it was before.  Shows like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud running prior to prime time often outrate a lot network programming 8-11pm in the US.  And these game shows have been around a lot longer and have more consistent numbers than many CBS,NBC,ABC and FOX weekly prime time shows.
