Radio West Message Board Goes Dark

As of this afternoon, Sunday October 12, this is the notice you will read when you attempt to access radiowest.ca.
It looks as if my repost of the October 12 Chart History is the last entry after 20+ years of it’s existence.RadioWest.ca's Owner, Ted Wendland, passed away on March 21, 2025.No one has stepped forward to take complete responsibility for RadioWest.ca, even when easier to administer platforms were proposed, so the difficult decision was made to "freeze" the site, to preserve the history in the 80,000 existing Posts that have been made on this discussion forum over the last two decades. No new Posts can be made to RadioWest.ca and all Users have been disabled.

Re: Radio West Message Board Goes Dark

What a shame. I visited there frequently and it was a great way to keep up with radio on the other side of the country. Like SOWNY, there were a lot of industry people as well as radio fans there, and it's a shame their wisdom and experience will no longer be seen on those pages.

SOWNY has died several near deaths over the years, but has always bounced back. Maybe a new version of Radio West will spring forth at some point in the near future.

I was asked if it would be appropriate for RW to be incorporated into SOWNY, but while I have no problem if people want to post about radio out there here, I was afraid doing so might take away the point of this board - news specifically about Southern Ontario and Western New York media, the SOWNY of the name.

I wish them all well and hope there's a new version out there one day soon.

If SOWNY were to absorb RadioWest, and I'm not saying whether or not it should, maybe the answer would be a Forum style with very clearly separate areas for multiple, distinct threads? More separated than what we have here (which I think works well for SOWNY on its own)...

I seriously considered it and was in touch via email with the guy who inherited the site after the death of its founder. The problem I foresaw was that just keeping this place up to date has become almost a full time job and I honestly didn't think I could do justice to both. So I very reluctantly said no.

If they could find an admin, they could certainly piggyback on here, but it's a lot of work with no reward other than personal satisfaction and there aren't a lot of people willing to take that on.

They may still find someone and hopefully, they'll can use SOWNY to tell people they're back.

Re: Radio West Message Board Goes Dark

That's too bad.  I discovered Radio West even before SOWNY.  I always thought the two sites complimented each other because they were very different.  Hope that RadioWest.ca raises from the ashes in the near future.
Owner, the late Ted Wendland, jon, albertaboyforlife and Neumann Sennheiser kept Radio West interesting and worth visiting.

I made a promise to radiofan/Ted Wendland, prior to his illness and death, to finish out the calendar year with an Aircheck of the Week.
