Jays Radio Crew Comes In 13th In Best Baseball Broadcast Team

Well, at least they're not last! The website "Awful Announcing" took a survey of 6,400 readers to rank the top 30 Major League Baseball announcers. While the crew of Ben Shulman and Chris Leroux didn't exactly ace the test, they're at least halfway there.

The Sportsnet radio team came in at #13, with some listeners deducting points for Rogers not sending them on the road during the regular season and calling the game off a monitor, to accusing TV dad Dan Shulman of ousting Ben Wagner so he could put his son in there as an act of nepotism. (Wagner's Orioles team came in at #21.)

Both critiques seem over the top to me in terms of marks, but others agree Shulman Jr. has really improved over the year or so he's been behind the mic and that he does a good job overall.

The Miami Marlins crew came in dead last at #30, but it's hard to argue with the group who came in first - the San Francisco Giants has the advantage of having the great and nationally known Jon Miller calling their games. He's one of the true greats and it doesn't surprise me that he came out on top.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in results of just 6,400 votes, but some of the comments were pretty interesting.

Awful Announcing also compiles similar list for NBA,NHL and National NFL Crews. For the record, leafs ranked 6th and the Raptors 16th on their respective lists.

Then whatever you do, don't look at the Numeris rankings!

Perhaps Fan590's numbers will improve as the Jays march closer to the MLB Playoffs. I think Sports Radio doesn't do well here because 1. Leafs annual early exit from the playoffs. 2. the Raptors are terrible. 3. Nobody cares about the Argos. Boston has not one but two sports stations in the top 10. But that town for the most part has competitive teams in all four major league sports. WGR is usually a top five station, mostly because of the Bills. WFAN is in or close to the top 10 in NYC because New Yorkers have always had strong opinions about their local teams whether they are terrible [Jets, Giants] or good [Yankees, except 2025] and they want their views heard.

Also I think a few of the stations you referred to (Buffalo excepted) are simulcast on FM in their various cities, which certainly helps attract more ears.

WGR is simulcast on WKSE FM HD-2 98.5.  Anyone know if the HD-2 simulcast contributes significantly to their significant ratings in the Buffalo market?

That's good to know. I'm not sure if we can get that HD signal here. But I was referring to full power FMs, which is helping some of those sports formats do better than they otherwise might in those markets.

Good point RA. WFAN also operates on 101.9 and currently sits 13th in the market. However, Both Boston sports stations are solely FM. WBZ 98.5 ranks 7th, while WEEI 93.7 sits in 9th place.
