CBC Releases Its Fall TV Schedule - With One Notable Show Missing

Canada's national network has unveiled the premiere dates for its new season and the shows that are coming back. But there's at least one program that's notably absent from the list - "Son of a Critch."

It's really the only CBC show I actually watch on a regular basis - I enjoy the radio tie-in - but it's not listed in the shows debuting this fall. I haven't been able to confirm it's officially been renewed for a fifth season, and until that's announced, it could mean the end of the Mark Critch-created sitcom.

“Son of a Critch” has always started its season in January, so that may be why.

The CBC’s Media Centre does make reference to a
Season 5 coming in “Winter 2026” as well.

So that means it's been renewed. Great. Thanks for finding that.

Shows based on young teens are always problematic because eventually the kids grow up and the premise isn't the same. The teen who plays the lead is getting older, along with the other young actors on the show. I'll be curious how they handle it. You can't play an adolescent forever.

The show may may not have much more life left. The actor who plays Mark has been cast in a highly anticipated film adaptation of one of Nintendo's biggest video game franchises.

Lead cast announced for The Legend of Zelda live-action film, coming May 2027

This movie could either make or break his future, depending on its reception.

This exact thing happened to me last year as I too thought they had dropped Son of a Critch, only to find out that it starts in the winter, like it did the year before, d’oh! It is the only show I watch on a regular basis from CBC, although I did check out North of North, not too bad.

I have watched Saint Pierre a couple of times and it was pretty good.  CTV is the same, some of their original shows come back during the second season of television, which is in the new year.  I too watch Son of a Critch and enjoy it, love the gentle Newfoundland humour and the program has a strong cast.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is also co-starring in a new movie with a couple of acting heavyweights: Allison Janney and Bryan Cranston. "Everything's Going To Be Great" was released in June.

Also, according to Wikipedia, Benjamin was born and raised in England.

The only shows on that list that are of interest to me are Corrie and Marketplace.
