It was the concert not only seen around the world but also performed there. Forty years (!!) later, the legend of Live Aid lives on.
Now CNN is bringing a four part documentary on the fundraising event to TV screens starting July 13th.
"Featuring interviews with iconic figures including Bob Geldof, Bono, Sting, Patti LaBelle, Phil Collins and Lionel Richie along with global leaders including George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice, President Obasanjo and Tony Blair, the series also includes rare archival footage of performances and backstage with Paula Yates, Boy George, Status Quo and George Michael."
It's a co-production with the BBC, so I'm guessing it will be pretty good.

Looking forward to this. CNN has been heavily promoting it but I can’t set my DVR yet, too far down the road!

Should be interesting if they get Plant and/or Page to speak on their shambolic set. John Paul Jones* might have something to say but only if the other two allow him. Phil Collins’ autobiography has a great piece on how even he had no idea why he was paired with the equally great drummer Tony Thompson for this horror show.
*Hey, it’s about time for another Crooked Vultures album, yes?

I had the pleasure of being backstage at the John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia for Live Aid US version. Same date. It was interesting. And yes - I saw some stuff I wish I had not. Nor will I mention those things here.
However - I did have a large bus with full interview studio built in. I was there on behalf of CFNY. Doing interviews with Live Aid artists. Dick Clark had the interview bus next to me.
When Duran Duran came off stage I approached them to come to my bus for an interview. I was told very quickly and with great authority that Duran Duran would NOT be doing any interviews. Yes I was disappointed.
Then I looked up and saw Simon LeBon approaching.
I stepped toward him and said - "Hey Earl Jive wanted me to say hello!". Simon looked at me and smiled. Then said - "are you wanting to do an interview?". I indicated that I would love that. Simon looked over to the other band members and said - "Hey guys! Come on. This guy wants to do an interview and he knows Earl Jive!".
And that is a true story. d
