Just last week Rogers extended their NHL broadcast deal for another 12 years to the tune of $11 billion. Today ESPN, Associated Press, Sportsnet and others are reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays will sign fan favourite Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a 14 year $500 million contract extension. Details from CBC Sports..

Although Guerrero is a fan favourite and can smack a ball, I’m not too sure that he’s worth half a billion dollars as a sportsman, but I think he’s considered the face of the Jays so that may explain the big bucks. I have tickets for a few games this year so hopefully the Jays improve, this weekend wasn’t good!

I think you will see very few games this season where the attendance hits 40K [except Yankees and Red Sox] Fans are taking a wait and see approach. If the team is competitive and playing over .500 ball the fans will slowly come back. However, if the team is buried in the basement by the All Star break, an average of 25K per game would be highly unlikely.

Half a billion bucks for a guy who may or may not have 5 good years left? Small wonder baseball is now unaffordable for most people. Under Rogers, they've become the Leafs with cleats.

Except the Leafs play consistently over .500 and make the playoffs. The Jays, not so much.

The handling of Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero by the team's brain trust Shapiro and Atkins is a fiasco. Failing to sign him before Ohtani and Soto was a disaster. That said, 500 million for ten years is very questionable given that players seldom remain viable after five. This year's Jays' "upgrade acquisitions" made this spring are a bunch of no-names devoid of any decent stats. Included are the desperate signings of veteran Anthony Santander, a one-year, 15 million dollar has-been and Max Scherzer, a 40-year-old pitcher on his way out. Shapiro and Atkins failed to bring a winner in Cleveland after 15 years and here in Toronto, we're in year ten and still counting.

And we will continue to count until Shapiro and Atkins are permanently relieved of their duties.
