Warning: Politics! CBC Back In The Spotlight As Election Issue

The choice could not be more apparent.

The Conservatives want to cut CBC English funding, while leaving Radio Canada alone.

But the Liberals are now pledging an additional $150 million in funding and hope to change the rules to make it harder to remove the money for future governments.

Can't wait to watch the CBC's coverage of this story, to see if they stay neutral!

Re: Warning: Politics! CBC Back In The Spotlight As Election Issue

Actually I thought twice about it, because it probably won't lead to anywhere good. But it IS about broadcasting, one of the few times something has come up that concerns both this election and this board. And it is an important issue for many.

So I felt I couldn't just ignore it, and my hope is people will stick to the issue and not wander off into tangents about the leaders they love or hate (usually hate!) in this upcoming vote.

(That and a dime will get me a cup of coffee!)

Money for broadcast programming!  Not for the 'boguses' of CBC executives! 😠

The announcement was made in Montreal pandering to Quebecers love of Radio-Canada. Don't think his message would have been nearly as effective if it had been given in Toronto.

As long at the 'new liberals' are not just giving them a blank cheque like the previous administration did

The libs should make the CBC more of a centrist voice in this age of far-left and far-right.
I think carny will do that.
He's more of a centrist unlike Trudeau.

More $$$ for CBC execs to divide among themselves.

Regardless, Poilievre's stance on CBC English TV is out of touch at this time and defunding is wrong headed IMO.   CBC English should drop some of the woke programming, be less preachy and relate a bit more to the average Canadian.  Also CBC English TV needs to have more fun.  CBC is at the low end of funding for public broadcasters as compared to others, where countries like France, Germany, The UK and even Australia per capita fund their public media better and more consistent.

If Canada is going to detach somewhat from the US economically, culturally and politically, the CBC will be more important that it ever has been.  So far, interestingly, the driving force behind this has been the public and not as much the government.

All the canucks not going south, not spending tourist $$$, cancelling business conventions in the US, selling winter homes, and not drinking American booze is all getting noticed south of the border.

Carney might be more centrist but he put Stephen Guilbeault in at Heritage which oversees the CBC.  Whether he remains in cabinet and in that post specifically if the Liberals get re-elected remains to be seen.

Re: Warning: Politics! CBC Back In The Spotlight As Election Issue

I have never watched much on CBC TV , until Son of a Critch, and I watched the new series St Pierre which I enjoyed. I also  watched the new series Small Achievable Goals just for the laughs. Other than those, really there is nothing else. The odd Marketplace episode perhaps over the years has been of interest I should add. But, I don't believe they deserve the guaranteed tax payer money increase the Liberals are promising , funding should stay at the current level in my opinion.
