For decades, there were certain shows you just didn't even try to compete with, showing reruns or cheap game shows if you were another network. Along with the Super Bowl, the Oscars was one of them. But not, apparently, any more.
I was surprised to see that the other networks that don't have the rights to Hollywood's biggest night are all showing original episodes of some of their most successful shows opposite it, which tells you something about the diminishing power of the movie celebration.
NBC has three hours of "The Americas," "Suits L.A." and "Grosse Pointe Garden Society," all first run.
CBS' "Tracker" is also new, last year's biggest debut show. "Watson" and "The Equalizer" are originals, too.
And over on Fox, its Animation Domination is new for the entire night.
This speaks volumes to me about how much the shine is off the Oscars and awards shows in general. They never used to even try to compete against the juggernaut, where the stars came out en masse. And I have to admit, I don't think I've seen any of the nominated films and don't care about who wins what on Sunday.
Are you watching the Oscars this year? Is it still the big deal it used to be? The other networks apparently don't think so. I'll be curious what the ratings show when it's all over.

Sometimes it might even depend on who's hosting.

I'm not a movie fan, so I won't watch and don't care and never will.
I wish they had a radio awords.
I used to watch the ethnic media awords on omny.
Those awords were interesting and not full of far-left talking points, they were more centrist and about the programs.

I am not watching the Oscars tonight and haven’t for the past few years. I was once a movie buff but not so much these days, however, I went off these awards as I found that some of the winning movies were often a bit obscure and meanwhile more popular titles were not nominated.
Case in point, the latest Mad Max movie, “Furiousa”, was packed with eye popping action, yet it was passed on in categories it should win in. I don’t think I have seen any of the Best Picture nominees, for a change! Each to their own, enjoy the show all the same!

This is kind of the same reason I gave up on the Emmys. I used to watch those awards faithfully every year.
Now, never.
Almost every nominated program is on a streamer I don't subscribe to, or am not interested in. Tough to root for your favourite show when you haven't see any of them.

I will be in and out watching the Oscars. I am looking forward to Conan O'Brian's opening. I don't know most of the movies but will likely watch a bit of the red carpet. CTV.ca and Etalk on line start their coverage at 6pm with the network kicking in at 7. I enjoyed Conan's promos on CTV mentioning that the broadcast would be tarrif free. Funny.

The problem is the Oscars depend on many people going to the movies.
The pandemic really ruined things.
I had always been an avid movie goer.
Saw pretty well all the main movies so watching the Oscars was relevant
OK it's just me but I haven't ben to a movie theatre since the pandemic.
That's about three years now.
Pre pandemic I would also rent all the main movies from the local DVD store, but they are all gone now because of streaming.
I refuse to subscribe to many channels so I can see all the movies.
And I still do not feels safe sitting in a theatre with people coughing and sneezing all around me.
Covid is not gone, and I still try to avoid crowded closed spaces though I now have 8 Covid shots.

All these award shows depend on mass consumption of the productions. That doesn't happen anymore with different streaming services having different TV shows and motion pictures. The only exception to this, at least so far, is music. This leads me to believe the Grammys and the Tonys will become the two most-watched award ceremonies in the next ten years..... while the others will struggle for viewership..

I think the Oscars might do well tonight ratings wise. They have been in an upswing in the last couple of years after a few where the bottom fell out. Conan has a lot of material with everything going on in the entertainment industry and the world. People don't get upset when someone like O'Brien, Billy Crystal or Johnny Carson comment and joke about politics. What turns people off is overly serious film stars that make the awards show a platform for their various grievances and politics.

I've never ever watched. I won't be spoiling my perfect record tonight.

I grazed by WKBW at exactly 8 PM and heard an announcer throw to break by saying "Coming up Amy Poehler," (the actress from Parks and Rec fame.)
Except whoever that guy was, he pronounced it Amy Poe Heller, instead of "Amy Polar" as it normally is. I didn't watch anything after that, but surely they have to at least pronounce the names of presenters correctly. (And I'm not calling anyone Shirley.) But if that's the quality and preparation for this broadcast, I'm glad my focus is elsewhere!

They also did not apologize for the mistake.
Anyway, I LOVE the Cinemastreams joke. That was amazingly funny!!
Conan did well to keep things funny throughout the Oscars.
They even had some fun with the Oscars Dress code this year:

Agreed. I suspect that celebrities with their preachy politics have eroded the audience for many of these awards shows over the past several years, too. The public gets their fill of that on social media, and many people simply want their entertainment to be entertaining.

Nick Offerman is the announcer, so it's a bit.

Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, who was the Oscars show announcer, were castmates on Parks and Rec, so it was meant as a joke.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew it didn't make sense. That was the only part of the Oscars I saw, all of 30 seconds and that was by accident. No idea they hired Offerman as the announcer. Still would not watch it! Did it actually end on time? I noticed CTV delayed their newscasts at 11 to bring viewers what felt like an endless and somewhat pointless eTalk.

Nope, it appears you eagerly leapt at a perceived opportunity to be a bit preachy & dismissive when in fact the joke went over your head.
That wise old adage ... don't jump to conclusions.

Talk about screw-ups. You can't get Hulu in Canada, but viewers in the States went crazy when their live Oscars feed suddenly went dark, just after they announced the Best Actress - but before Best Picture was revealed.
Glitches happen online of course, but the conspiracy theorists were out in force, after the winner for Best Director told the crowd Hollywood should take new movies back to theatres instead of streaming services - like Hulu!
The mess was resolved after a time, but viewers on the service had to log back in to see the ongoing live video.
Well, at least they didn't get the Best Picture wrong like they did a few years ago!

Speaking of streaming, would you pay for the privilege of watching the Oscars? One day in the not-so-distant future, you may have to. How long before every big event comes with a bill?

Oscars ended at around 10:42, approximately.
I thought that the whole E talk "After the Oscars" filler was odd. It should have ended at 11 pm.
Meanwhile, ABC went with a teaser of American Idol, infomercial style.
(or infotainment style, depending on how one views this filler to be)
It went heavy on what to expect on the program. I believe they went to ABC news @ 11 on time, but I could be wrong.

The Oscars aren't the only item Netflix has its sights on. Apparently they are not satisfied with just Christmas Day NFL games. They want one of the Sunday afternoon packages currently held by CBS and FOX. While the current television contract runs until 2033, the NFLhas a clause that permits bidding to take place four years earlier, which would be 2029.

That same long arm of the law is coming for a much more deserving TV star. It has taken far too long, but it's coming...maybe only in the afterlife...but it's coming.

No word yet on ratings for the Oscars in the US or Canada. But we do have figures from the UK. Low numbers but we need to take the overseas time shift into account..
