Battle For 106.5 FM In Toronto Begins This Week

The CRTC opens hearings on Monday for control of the now silent 106.5 FM in Toronto, the former home of CKAV the Aboriginal Voices station. They lost the licence and went silent (changed from "went dark" in honour of our friend Dale Patterson in another thread) in late 2016 after the owners were found in continued non-compliance with licence conditions. That followed a lengthy court fight that allowed them to remain on air for months, despite the CRTC's eviction notice.

It appears there are only two entities trying for the coveted spot. Wawatay Native Communications is vying for Ottawa and Toronto, while First Peoples Radio wants to re-establish the network across Canada. There are also bids in for vacated frequencies in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

Re: Battle For 106.5 FM In Toronto Begins This Week

As I've stated more than enough times...I am not BIG on the crtc.  They serve the needs of who?  Their rules and regs are burdensome.  AND they make NO sense in the 21st century.  That they have allowed Rogers and bell and other companies to cheapen our broadcast industry...not to mention the little 'fellas' who follow with their own corporate shame is inexcusable.

First Nations peoples should be able to do whatever they friggin' want within the boundaries of decency.  If people listen...they'll make money.  If they suck...they won't.  Tribal councils won't give over monies to keep crap floating.  Eventually the toilet gets flushed.  We've been telling those who were here before us what to do for way too many centuries.  They can decide what works and serves their needs on their own.

The crtc, meanwhile, can go piss up a rope.

More details:

Wawatay's station would be 930 watts (ERP 2,400), a spoken word format and promises 63 hours of local programming each broadcast week in languages ranging from English, Cree, Inuktitut, Ojibwe, Algonquin to Oji-Cree, Mohawk and Michif.

First People's is suggesting 984 watts (ERP 2,600) and a music based format that speaks English, Cree, Inuktitut, Ojibwe, Algonquin, Oji-Cree, Mohawk and Michif.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
I'm guessing the CRTC will most likely grant the Canada wide licence to better fill ALL aboriginal frequencies rather than just Ottawa and Toronto.

Speaking of sensational aboriginal broadcasters, let's not forget Rockin' Russ McLeod, CFUN and CHUM  superjock from years gone by.
