Can This Global Claim Be True?

I was watching Global's late newscast on Sunday night, when a promo came on for their weekday morning show.

It boastfully claimed the network's offering in those early hours is the "#1 Canadian News & Lifestyle Morning Show."

Surely they can't mean ratings-wise. I can't say definitively but that doesn't quite sound right to me. Does Global's morning effort seriously beat CTV? Or even CP24 Breakfast locally?

I can't prove or disprove it, but I've seen the show on occasion and it just doesn't seem plausible to me.

If they're counting all the viewers across Canada (not just Toronto) that watch Global's local morning news and The Morning Show, I could see that being true. Global's morning news destroys the competition out west (BC, Edmonton, and Calgary have had a 30+ year head start on their current competition), which is a great lead in for The Morning Show. CTV's Your Morning airs in the middle of the night in the west (before the local CTV Morning Live shows), and there's no local BT out west anymore.

And The Morning Show has been claiming this for a couple of years now.

If it's just Toronto, then yeah I don't think they're #1 but that's not what they're claiming. That title probably goes to either BT or CP24 Breakfast.

Re: Can This Global Claim Be True?

I just checked the Rogers Trending Channel which shows what their customers across Canada are watching or more specifically which channels are tuned which may or may not be viewed by anyone. Considering all the bars/hospitals etc in the GTA where CP24 is on but few are watching, CP24 is rarely out of the top five rankings. As of 8:30am today the Top Ten were 1. CP24. 2. Breakfast Television. 3. Weather Network. 4. CBC Morning Live 5. Sportscentre [TSN4] 6. CNN 7. Journey Back To Christmas on W. 8. Sportsnet Central [SNO]  9. CTV Your Morning. 10. NBC Today. Just outside the top ten were Global News Morning [11] CHCH Morning Live [12] GMA [14] CBS Morning [15]

That's much more complete than Bell Fibe that only has the top five and I believe it is only for Ontario and Quebec.  CBC Morning does well on Fibe as well in the mornings.  If Rogers trending is all across Canada, it is surprising that CHCH does so well coming in at eleventh.  Global News Morning does show up often in the top 5, but I have never noticed it at #1, usually 4 or 5.  Normally on Fibe #1 bounces between CP24 and Breakfast Television.

Re: Can This Global Claim Be True?

Any claim to being "#1" can be valid as it depends on the criteria used to prove that statistic. The audience is never told which criteria is used so it is assumed it is "#1 overall".

I've been in countless ratings meetings where this show or that show were "#1" in this demo or that demo, but certainly weren't "#1 overall". Congrats and cheers still ensued.

I'm on Bell Fibe as well but I'm suspicious as hell when I see Bell channels constantly in the top five.

Re: Can This Global Claim Be True?

I think it is legit since I have noticed at times there aren't any or only one Bell channel in the top five.  CP24 is popular so it is not surprising it normally would be there, CNN is as well.  Evening programming is all over the map, but CTV and CTV2 do have a lot of popular programming and most of what I see makes sense.  The only CBC shows I ever see in the top five would be Heartland and Murdoch Mysteries, sometimes Family Feud Canada ,and CBC News morning.  W's programming is showing up a lot right now with all of the Christmas themed shows.

Oh, I'm aware its legitimacy and my suspicion aren't related. Just because it looks like the fix is in doesn't make it so.
