You may have already heard this story, but if not, it's pretty incredible. Back in the days of Chuck Barris' The Dating Game, a man or a woman would sit in front of a wall, where three eligible dates were questioned and they selected one for a very expensive on-the-house date.
I'm not sure how they vetted the people who came on the show, (hard to believe but they didn't) but in at least one instance, they missed something important. A guy named Rodney Alcala somehow qualified to be a hidden 'bachelor' and went on the show in the 70s. The female had to choose from three of them and after questioning them all with provocative (read: sex-tinged) questions, she picked him as her date.
But after they were introduced, she got weird vibes off the guy and, despite being offered a great paid experience, decided not to go out with him.
It was a decision that may have saved her life.
It turns out Alcala would later be convicted of killing and attacking a number of women and she avoided being alone with him. Like many serial killers, he was charming and good looking, and was able to portray what psychiatrist Harvey Cleckley called "The Mask Of Sanity" - the ability to hide who he really was.
"At the time of his appearance on The Dating Game, Rodney Alcala had already murdered at least five women in Southern California and had served three years behind bars for horrifically beating and raping an eight-year-old girl.
Shortly after he had been released, he ended up doing a second stint behind bars after assaulting a 13-year-old girl.
He'd even earned a spot on the FBI's Most Wanted list a few years earlier, but as producers on the ABC show did not conduct a background check on the contestant, nobody had a clue."
It's a fascinating story abut a "creepy feeling" that saved a woman from possible disaster.

He had a criminal record for raping a child but was still able to appear as a contestant because the show didn't do background checks? She could have sued.
