That voice you hear overnight on Sonic FM in Vancouver isn't a real voice at all. We know Rogers made a deal to bring the technology to Canada this past year, but we didn't know exactly what they planned to do with it.
Now, apparently, we do.
This a test of the system and Rogers confirms if it works well in B.C., you could be hearing it hit the air (A.I.r?) elsewhere in Canada soon. If it hasn't already.
"The spokesperson did not respond to follow-up emails regarding which other Rogers properties are using AI on air. They also didn't respond to questions about how long it has been on air, and what role it plays at the station beyond a voice between songs."
I can see CHFI using this for its overnight show and I'm of two minds on it. First, I don't really like the idea of a machine trying to replace a human being - let alone being "creative." On the other hand, as one radio vet points out in the article below, if they're not hiring anyone to do overnights anyway, it's not taking a single job away from anyone.
At least not yet!

It almost doesn't matter how much it costs. A.I. never asks for a day off, never demands overtime, never calls in sick, never complains about working weekends, overnights or extra days, never wants a raise, never gets benefits and never threatens to quit.
No wonder Rogers thinks it's worth the money. That's the sad part, but I get it.

And never threatens with a wrongful dismissal suit.

If you're up late or very early and want to hear what this sounds like (remember it's Pacific Time), here's the link to listen live. (Canada only for those with a VPN.)

I believe CHFI still has obligations to air John Tesh late evenings and overnight.

At least the Sonic A.I. addresses herself as "I'm Sonic A.I.".
They're not trying to hide anything or fool anybody.

They could end it today if they wanted to.

There's a lot of Wolfman Jack stuff when he did his syndicated show that could be replayed. Since he primarily did oldies, you'd never really know the difference and you don't need a phony A.I. Wolfie.
