Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

A very good but very anonymous source appears to have confirmed my initial suspicion, telling me through a DM that Jim Richards will, in fact, be taking over The Rush. The exact timeframe isn't known. The long time 'RB moderator recently spent a week hosting the show and execs. must have liked what they heard.

So that leaves the question of who takes over NewsTalk Tonight. The same source tells me that regular contributor Deb Hutton (the wife of Tim Hudak, another RB regular) will be getting a show of her own on 1010 as well. Apparently, station personnel were impressed with her performance when she was one of about 500 people who guested on the afternoon drive program over the past few months. Could she be inheriting NTT? I suppose that would make sense, since that job will come open with Richards' ascension to afternoons.

Again, no word on exactly when the revelation is made public, but my guess would be the same day as the Richards' announcement.

Thanks for sharing this, RA.

Hasn't a rollout of a music format switch or talk show revamp often happened after Labour Day? New school year, people back from vacation, etc.  I wonder if that's a possibility here.

So that leaves the question of who takes over NewsTalk Tonight.

That's a sad skeleton of a show, with Richards often trying to apologize for a GTA-centric topic and "explain" it to those listening on the (few) other stations carrying it. It can't quite click for local and can't quite click for a network show - caught in this weird middle ground. I don't think that show is working. The alternative, of course (especially to the bean counters), might be re-rolls from earlier in the day in those few hours, which is worse. I suppose we're beyond the possibility of a local Toronto-only show in those hours now.

I do like Hutton. Wonder if they'll give her a weekend slot show, or that evening role vacated by Richards - or at least part of it (and rerolls for an hour or two?).

The fall ratings period starts the last week of August, so I'll put my money there.

I didn't need yet another reason to avoid 'The Rush', but now I have one.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

Disgraceful if true. Deb Hutton should not be within a thousand feet of a microphone.

And Richards, well...enough said.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

It's also possible that Hutton will get an entirely different shift - perhaps co-hosting The Rush with Richards? Remember, that show had two people back when it first appeared.

If that's the case, then what happens to the cross-country evening show? I'd like to see Shane Hewitt get that (having hosted the overnight nationwide show "The Shift" on Corus for a number of years,) although I want to make it clear that's my suggestion and there's absolutely no word if that's what they're doing.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

I can't imagine Deb Hutton, a former Mike Harris advisor (Harris, who presided over the murder of Indigenous protester Dudley George) and a mother of still young children, not to mention wife of failed wannabe Conservative premier Tim Hudak, would take a low-level late evening talk show slot.
But at least Hutton isn't former Sun T-V standin for Ezra Levant, Agar.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

More significantly, who is paying for Hutton's airtime? She's a political operative who was (and maybe still is) employed as a contractor by our current Premier/Very Special FAS Posterboy.

The infestation of PR Professionals into broadcast media must eventually be managed. And we can hope that there's no mercy.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

The infestation of politicians onto radio airwaves has been going on for some time.
I grew up in Vancouver where it seemed just about any premier became a radio talk show host once they left office.
Or they were a radio host but ran for provincial office and became politicians, then switched back to radio after.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

If they ended up giving the shift to Jim Richards, why the months and months and months of musical chairs?

Were they waiting for an answer from someone, say John Moore, about if he'd like to eventually take over afternoons again. And if he's said he would, this in-house move makes sense.

Whatever the reason congratulations to Jim Richards on the new shift. I hope he takes the ball and runs with it and I plan on checking the show out.

If Nair's exit (or McAurthur's) involved a complicated HR situation, often the position won't be officially filled until that's been resolved.

Well, that sounds familiar! I wonder who that is on our radio station?

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

I recently upgraded my 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with a 2023 vehicle that included HD Radio, Android Auto, and Sirius XM. I have not listened to AM radio in months, but last night I turned on Newstalk 1010. I did not recognize the voice, it turned out to be  Shane Hewitt. I liked his show. I know about him, but he was engaging and entertaining.

I like Jim Richards, I even listed to him back in the Fan 590 days, but sadly probably won't tune in.

I hope Shane has a podcast or something that I can continue to listen to him on demand.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

An update to my update.

I'm not entirely sure how this will work, but the latest intel is that Deb Hutton will be on The Rush from 2-4, with Jim Richards on until 6. I've never heard of of a co-host leaving the drive home show halfway through it, but that could very well be the plan.

Still waiting to hear what happens to NewsTalk Tonight and who gets that shift.

When that tree falls in the forest, less than 10 people on 1010 will hear it come down or care

I like your suggestion of Shane Hewitt taking on News Talk Tonight, I find him very engaging, however, not crazy about Deb Hutton getting The Rush gig, I find her a bit condescending at times. Onwards.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

So the new evening show on 1010 is “Shane Hewitt and the Night Shift”, just announced on MITM.
The Rush is now hosted by Hutton, 2-4, then Richards, 4-6. Not crazy about the split hosting idea.
Looking forward to Hewitt’s show but will miss Richards in the evening.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

I don't listen to radio much in the afternoon and talk radio even less, however I have heard The Drive on CKTB a few times and generally it is superior to what Newstalk 1010 has on.  Jon Gonzo is easy to listen to,  less whiney and not negative about everything like 1010.  He actually has some fun and moves from light fluff to more serious topics easily.  The show has local news and Jon's sidekick also is easy to listen to and they work well together.  The program just seems more relaxed and natural than what CFRB has had on The Rush over the past few years.  And more fun.

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

Interesting that they decided to make the move in the middle of summer. As some here noted, these kinds of changes often presage new fall line-ups - although radio isn't like TV in that respect. I suppose this will give them a chance to establish a foothold in those timeslots and by the time the Fall arrives, they'll have been in place for a while and worked the bugs out. (Still haven't updated the new schedule on their website, but I assume that's coming.)

I like the Shane Hewitt move - and he has nationwide experience, having hosted the overnight show on Corus for years before they cancelled it. It was called "The Shift." The new one is "The Night Shift." So he gains a new show in Toronto and adds a word!

The guy is good and I appreciate the fact it will give me something to listen to once the baseball season is over. (Although most Jays fans think it's already over!)

Seems they've updated it again. But this one doesn't show Jim Richards on at 4 PM. Bizarre.

"Hey, Jonesy and Serge are off on vacation. Can you update the website with the new lineup."

"Hell no, I don't know how."

" Well I don't either man."

"Give it a shot, what's the worst that can happen."

"Okay."

Re: Source: Jim Richards Getting "The Rush," Deb Hutton To Get Own Show

Adjusting shows and schedules in the back-end of those sites is clunky and cumbersome - plus, you pretty much have to do it live with the website updating in real time as you edit.
