U.S. Television Political Debate Ratings History

I know last night's Trump/Biden debate will surface as a topic of discussion here with the potential of it quickly going off the rails and our moderator having to close the topic. By framing this strictly as a media event, hopefully that won't be necessary. The total number of viewers who watched all or part of the debate will probably be released by Neilsen in the next day or two. The information I am interested in is which network will be crowned the ratings champion. Some past Neilsen debate numbers. The most watched was the first 2016 Clinton/Trump which clocked in at 84M. In second place was Carter/Reagan in 1980 at 80.6M. The two 2020 Trump/Biden debates drew 73.1M and 63M.

Probably marginal from a ratings perspective but NPR also carried the debate, so there’s likely some additional radio listenership on top of TV ratings.
