WXYZ "Action News" gone...

Apparently it's been a few weeks but I just noticed this morning. The iconic "Action News" name has disappeared from the Detroit stations' newscasts which are now called "7 News Detroit",

In it's heyday channel 7 Action News was the undisputed news leader in Detroit with bombastic anchor Bill Bonds regularly ripping into politicians and sports figures with his cutting editorials.

Re: WXYZ "Action News" gone...

Kind of the end of an era. Having received Detroit TV on cable for many years, I often saw Action News, complete with Bonds at the anchor desk... a legend in the Motor City. Though I preferred Mort Crim on WDIV 4, the NBC affiliate, then a close runner-up to WXYZ in the local TV news game.

Re: WXYZ "Action News" gone...

When my parents had their Starchoice dish, they had access to Detroit and Spokane for their U.S. network feeds. I could never understand why WWJ, the CBS affilliate had no local newscasts. Could it have had something to do with CBS losing the NFL broadcast rights to FOX in 1993? I know shortly after that WJBK became the FOX affilliate and CBS was left scrambling to find an affilliate for the Motor City. They ended up settling for a much weaker signalled ch 62.

Not quite sure about accuracy here but I had heard that years ago Bill Bonds signed the first million dollar a year contract for a local television news anchor.

Re: WXYZ "Action News" gone...

Having grown up in London, Detroit news was a mainstay with their anchors such as Bill, Jack Legoff and John Kelly before he moved to a daytime talk show. If memory serves correct, Bill also had a stint doing ABC network news for a brief time - I believe it was on weekends.
