See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

Ever since they announced a version of "Law & Order" would take place in Toronto, I've been curious to see how it will portray the city and what kind of "ripped from the headlines" stories it might dramatize. We finally have a small clue, now that a new trailer for the series has dropped online, the very first one that hints at what's to come.

It appears one the of plots will resonate with folks here. It's about a scandal surrounding a mayor found to be smoking crack. The trailer also shows what appears to be a shot of an enriched City TV news screen and the actors walking towards what looks like Old City Hall.

It seems like the show will stay true to the mothership down south - it even features announcer Steve Zirnkilton as the voice on the intros.

This is one Canadian show I'm really looking forward to and its first 10-episode season will air Feb. 22nd on City TV stations across the country. The date is interesting. That's a Thursday, when all the other L&O's air on NBC. So to show this one in primetime, it would seem likely that City will have to give up at least one of the simulcasts of the three other U.S versions. I'll be curious to see which one they pick and where they put the displaced American program.

If ratings (for the curent 3) are good enough, (sim sub and all) It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they simply air L&O Toronto @ 7PM, allowing for sim sub revenue to remain unchanged.

Decent promo but the second line of copy is really clunky/poorly written. Looking forward to it none the less! Thanks for sharing RA.

Here's a Toronto Life Q & A from a few months ago with Law and Order Toronto showrunner Tassie Cameron.  She's the daughter of Stevie Cameron.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

The trailer looks great.  Just hope that the critics here aren't overly harsh and try to prove how smart they are by exaggerating every nuance that may not be 100% accurate.  This is a TV drama and should be held to account the same way that all others are judged.   TV dramas, even those "ripped from the front page" are almost never totally accurate or precise.

Given the fact that there are already so many versions of the Law and Order franchise, it will be interesting to see where else this Toronto brand of the show runs.  An ambitious project for City TV.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

Gotta love the intro voiceover and way Toronto is pronounced, like a carnivore gingerly tasting tofu for the first time.

Thanks for sharing RA, I'm going to give Canuck Law and Order a chance, despite the crushingly bad "concrete evidence" quip.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

I heard Oakley say on Wednesday that at some point, the crew from Law & Order Toronto were filming scenes in the AM 640 building at Corus Quay.

Does that mean some of their programming is a crime?

The short, internal building shot (with all the glass windows) at 42 seconds into the promo, was shot at Corus Quay

Can't wait to see what he does next. I don't think they gave him enough to do. By the way if you've never seen The Newsroom with Sam Waterston as Charlie Skinner, I highly recommend it, his character is much different than Jack on L&O. Emily Mortimer and the rest of the cast are brilliant too.

Not sure how strongly invested the parent company is in the success of the Toronto Law and Order franchise... in every other new show launched there have eventually been crossover episodes with the established shows, L&O Special Victims/original L&O and regular overlapping storylines with the Chicago P.D./Med/Fire families.

Rogers has been hyping the new Toronto Law & Order during the All Star Game this afternoon on Sportsnet.  They have run a few longer promos.  Good production on the All Star Game.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

In case you missed it in the listings and want to set your DVR, the Toronto version debuts this coming Thursday at 8 PM, with the original "L&O" being moved back to 7 o'clock on City TV. That makes four hours straight of Law & Order on the same Canadian over-the-air channel on the same night, something I'm not sure I've ever seen before in this city.

The Toronto Star did a major spread on the new series in Saturday's edition. You can read it here.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

The early reviews are in on L&O: T.O. and they seem to be pretty positive. The rest of us get our first glimpse of this version on Thursday night at 8 PM.

"Only the first episode was available to screen before debut, so it’s hard to predict how things will go from here. But at the very least, there were multiple twists and a quick pace that kept Episode 1 engaging."

One interesting note that won't ring a bell with everyone: The two women behind the show are the daughters of Stevie Cameron, a well known Canadian investigative journalist, who specialises in crime stories. So they come by their bona fides honestly.

He's 83.   He can run for President and show those other two young whippersnappers how it's done!

I remember him from way back in 1984 in The Killing Fields.    The first time I noticed him.

As a fan of those shows, I expect more-or-less similar plots.    I'll be interested in the actors accents and how they treat the local landmarks in the stories.     One of the Star Trek's produced here did a great job using landmarks in Toronto like Ontario Place / Science Centre / City Hall in their sci-fi fare but with a little CGI to spruce them up.    It was entertaining and not always easy to figure out what they were with all the special effects.    I notice one of the snippets in the preview used  what appears to be a construction site murder scene.   Plenty of those around.       The air time was supposed to be 7:00 pm every Thursday but I see CITY has the original L&O @ 7 on the Ignite schedule and the Toronto one at 8:00.    I'm familiar with Canadian starring actor Kathleen Munroe but don't know the others.

CBC did their usual solid job with this story on the show, including a tv feature with interviews with the cast, and how there's a difference in the way guns are featured. I think it could be a really good show and the first clunky trailer didn't do it justice, pun intended.

Sidebar: lukewarm congrats to the Law and Order franchise for recycling the Criminal Intent angle, was this clever branding or lack of imagination, a little of column a and a little of column b?

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

Slight spoiler alert.

I liked the show well enough and will definitely watch it again. But my only problem with it is the same as I had with the original NBC-made "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" that starred Vincent D'Onofrio.

The main detective in that one was simply too knowledgeable about everything. In the case of "Toronto," the guy is an expert on art, finance, meteorology, wine, medicine, Latin, history and way too much more. I never found it believable in the old NBC series and I don't buy it here, either.

No one, no matter how clever, can be an expert on everything.

That's just my opinion, others may not have the same issues. Despite that, though, it was a good start and we'll see where it goes as the episodes progress.

I was out Thursday evening and forgot to PVR the show. Attempted to watch it this morning on CITYTV.COM. First attempt the soundtrack was way off. 2nd attempt sound but no picture. 3rd attempt Starts off great saw the beginning plus the opening credits. Picture froze about the 6 minute mark. I gave up. Maybe tonight I will have better luck. From what I saw, I liked. Would watch episode 2.

Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have both reviewed the Toronto series. I don't know how to post them here. I am sure some member will. One thing I am curious about. If/when/and where will it be shown in the U.S.

I started laughing immediately after Graff (the guy you mentioned) started talking.   What kind of accent is that?   I've never heard one like it before.   It sounded too made up, almost an American impersonation of a Canadian accent, except that actor Aden Young was born in Toronto and moved to Australia at 10 years.   So I'd expect something genuine.    Another chuckle.   If you freeze the Toronto map in the early part of the show when they're looking for the body, you'll see it lacks details like streets and just shows a few neighbourhoods & landmarks, but the typeface was huge so it will do for viewers!    It looked like one of those tourist map handouts blown up to a full wall, not something in a police station.     I got a kick out of the show and will continue watching.   Great plot twist at the end and not one shot fired the whole episode that I noticed.   Something the showrunner said will be a characteristic of the series.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

I watched the show last night and it was fine.  Police dramas are not something that I usually follow much so this one likely won't be different.  Seem to be an over abundance of police procedurals and medical dramas on tv.

The story itself was good.  It held my interest which isn't always easy with all of the commercials on OTA TV.  Next time I will record.

I found some of the reviews sort of weird.  Why are so many columnists (especially in Canada) making such a big thing about "Toronto playing itself."  Please.

Guess these folks have never seen Murdoch Mysteries, Private Eyes, Rookie Blue, The Listener, Saving Hope, Coroner, Flashpoint, Degrassi (all versions), Transplant (although technically it was Montreal playing Toronto), The Associates and many others.

In terms of accuracy.  It's a TV show and Hollywood (in this case Toronto) usually takes some creative license to juice up the plot.

Overall good on Rogers.  An ambitious project for the smallest Canadian "network" and hopefully this will add to their success with Hudson and Rex, Canada's Got Talent, and the original Murdoch Mysteries which was a production from City/CHUM.

Re: See The First "Law & Order: Toronto" Trailer

Just noticed that Law and Order Toronto is repeated this evening at 7pm on City.  The second installment is on this Thursday at 8pm.   I wonder if NBC or Peacock will pick up the show to run during the summer?  They likely have first right of refusal.

I don't think we have mentioned this but Global has renewed Family Law for a 4th season.  Filming begins mid March in Vancouver.  CW is now a partner and will run season 4 as well.

Thanks P1. Saw this in time to PVR  the episode. Forgot to tape it Thursday and had issues attempting to watch it on line.
