A.I. Generated "George Carlin" Stand-Up Special Is Kinda Creepy

If you ever wondered what all the fuss over Artificial Intelligence was about during the actors' strike, here's a great example. It's an A.I. George Carlin "concert" called "I'm Glad I'm Dead." Carlin passed away over a decade ago and this does little to help his legacy. His daughter has decried the video and doesn't think it pays tribute to his legacy.

And she worries it's just the start of a similar series of these things, using other late comics.

Is it funny or just creepy? You decide.

The humour is George Carlin, but it doesn't sound like him

I saw this referred to as 'cultural necrophilia'. An apt term for such an indignity.

Stephen King vibes. Spooky, unpleasant and a hollow travesty that could put the yuck in Yuk-Yuk's.

Eric Idle has said he's not afraid of artificial intelligence, he's afraid of artificial stupidity. This attempt is artificial stupidity.

On the plus side there's an excellent opportunity to make Dane Cook actually funny in the future.

Wish Douglas Adams was still around to give his opinion on this.

Well, if you believe A.I. works, he could be!

Yeah, that was my reaction too.  The humour was on track and even the delivery was often there but the voice literally sounds like someone trying to do an impersonation of Carlin.

It would be more impressive if they could have nailed his voice.

Case in point.  Someone took a recording of Paul Anka actually singing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and replaced the voice with Sinatras using AI.  Now THAT is spooky.

Agreed on most points here...the material is Carlin-esque, but the impression sounds nothing like the O.G. to me.

I don't find it funny or creepy, I just find it sad.

This was almost inevitable and could be a sign of things to come where A.I. is concerned.

Good. I heard Taylor Swift will sue over her AI porn that recently went viral. I had high hopes, but now think AI is going to cause more harm than good. Too bad.

Some people do really nasty stuff with otherwise potentially useful tools. There's this desire to maximize personal gain and power, and they'll achieve or seek to achieve these by whatever means necessary. They claw through other people to rise to top positions, or wherever they can milk the system. They include political leaders and business execs but are found in all walks of life, and in many organizations. And they also exist in the lower ranks, having yet to climb or perhaps not having the ability. (Of course not every person who climbs or wants to climb is a nasty piece of work). Certainly AI is a potent, even a potentially dangerous tool. But in the wrong hands, and controlled undemocratically, it's highly problematic. Much the same applies to people who are well meaning but incompetent. So far our political leaders have proven unable or unwilling to regulate AI.

This story appeared in last week's Saturday Star. It's also pretty disturbing and has A.I.-like implications about the harm this ever improving software can do.

Why weird ads about Sophie Trudeau, Howie Mandel and Mary Berg mean we're in trouble online
