Jerry Agar Gets Drunk On The Air For Science

Jerry was appointment listening yesterday @ 11:20 when he said earlier that he had been drinking the previous night and would play the recording he made for science reporter Dan Riskin and the audience.

When I heard this I set my alarm!   Science and booze are two of my favourite subjects.

The reason?   Dan previously covered an anti-impaired driving app where the subject recites a tongue twister into it when sober and then it determines whether or not impairment has set in by the way the person's recitation changes as the drinks flow.

Jerry decided to down 8 oz of Glenlivet 18 and repeat the phrase following every shot, all while recording the event.    He even gets tipsy-talkative at the end and his story is surprisingly relevant.

This experiment also has a surprise ending.   I won't spoil it here, so spend 5 minutes and listen here:
Jerry Agar 11/22 11:20 am.
Title: "WED NOV 22nd Hour 2: Can Jerry still read tongue-twisters after 8oz of hard liquor?
November 22, 2023 • 38 mins

In a follow-up to a study that says tongue-twisters could be used to gauge alcohol-intoxication levels -- Jerry actually does the experiment and talks to Dan Riskin about the results."

In the first season WKRP episode "Fish Story" Johnny and Venus participate in an alcohol drinking experiment on air.

I remember that episode. The cop kept getting more and more angry when Johnny Fever did better on the sobriety tests the more he had to drink!

Re: Jerry Agar Gets Drunk On The Air For Science

In my very first radio job in Trail BC (in 1978) we had a cop come to the station and one of our crew sat with him and drank as the cop asked him questions etc.
Pete would have a drink at every music break and then talk some more after a few songs were played.
It  was supposed to demonstrate alcohol impairment that would make driving dangerous.
Needless to say Pete walked home after the experiment was over.
