21-Yr.-Old Gains Worldwide Fans Playing Motown On Detroit Radio Stn.

It's not often you see someone who's 21 that's more into The Supremes and Marvin Gaye than Taylor Swift and Drake. But that's what's attracting a growing audience for a young adult named Lindsey Renee, who was raised by her dad to love the vintage old Berry Gordy sound.

Now she's taken that innate knowledge to an otherwise obscure Detroit radio station, WPON-AM, and has found herself gathering listeners online from all over the world. The music is part of the reason, but the other is that, having been practically raised on the tunes, she really knows her stuff.

"[She] doesn’t just play a record like “Where Did Our Love Go” by The Supremes; she provides listeners with backstories and little-known or forgotten nuggets about the song – like that the 1964 hit was written by Holland Dozier Holland and The Four Tops provided background vocals. She often gives socio-political context to the records, too.

 “
To have someone so young with such in-depth knowledge of the music is incredible,” Delisca said. “The ‘Rhythm and Soul Patrol Show’ is the best hidden secret in the world.”

The station brands itself as "Talk 'n Rare Oldies" and its home page contains comments from listeners that include:

"This quality and rarity of music cannot be found anywhere else on the net."  Kansas City

"You are the best oldies station I have ever listened to." California

What seems to be especially unusual is that her show is consistently attracting younger listeners who have never heard the songs before but want to find out more. You can hear what all the fuss is about by listening here.

It's mentioned in the post, but is easily missed. WPON is online and can be heard through most of the usual sources, like Streema or off the station's own website

Not a bad station for the oldies.
Interesting to note:
This radio station is owned by BIRACH Broadcasting Corp.
The same company that is trying to pass WTOR off as a Toronto radio station.

This brings to mind all the 'reaction' videos on Youtube.

Legions of 20-somethings are first-time viewing '60s, '70s and '80s music and commenting on it while viewing.

It's almost like rolling back the years to see the way many of us reacted to a legendary song BEFORE we realized how legendary it would become.

Just launch Youtube and search for 'pink floyd reaction videos', as an example. Substitute the artist of your choice.

I could see this "Motown" thing catching on in a town like Detroit.

They shouldn't really promote the station as WPON AM 1460 since it gives the impression that they are actually broadcasting on the AM band.

Some posters on the Michigan TV and Radio Buzzboard were hoping that WFDF 910 would have moved to a classic/Motown/soul format since nobody in the Motor City is playing much old Motown.  One poster sited CKWW as one of the few that regularly plays any.  However this could change soon with the ownership change.
