rych was my go-to guy for almost everything that had to do with radio and radio personnel for my ckco-history.com website. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him. The once-a-month CKCO/CKKW/CFCA Old Fart Lunches will never be the same again.
RIP rych

I am very sad to inform you that our friend rych mills passed away on the weekend from natural causes of an apparent heart attack. I have been in contact with rych's sister in British Columbia and can let you know rych is in the care of the Henry Walser Funeral home. The funeral will be a private family funeral and we are still discussing a possible celebration of life at a later date.
rych worked at 864 King St. West, Kitchener from 1967 to 2011....on-air and as a Production Coordinator for CKKW-AM and CFCA-FM.
rych was involved in so many historical events, the Record newspaper column, antique collecting and selling, the Waterloo Historical Society, the post card club. He will be missed by so many.
Eventually I would ask you to share your memories and condolences on the Henry Walser funeral home web site once the obituary appears and for more details.
Kind regards in sadness
John Yost

Good luck with your search!
Not the same "Duke Roberts" - the one I'm looking for had a whole sordid pass with links between Saskatchewan and the Dakotas. - thank though

If this group can't help me I might have actually reached the end of me rope.
I'm a retired employee of CKCO-TV in Kitchener and own and run the website ckco-history.com. On the site I have a page of all those (that I know of) who have worked in television or radio at 864 King St. W, Kitchener and have passed away.
The In-Memory page has so many people listed (almost 300) and a small number (6) who I've never been able to find obituary information about despite extensive searching. Some of these people have had a career in broadcasting. So if you can share any information about the following people I'd be most appreciative.
Gord Butler (radio announcer); Paul Kudla (technician - died March 2015); Jack McLean (TV sales); Ron Prince (news); Lon Ritzo aka Duke Roberts (radio announcer - seems there was more than one with that alias); Bill Whiting (promotions manager)

As someone who has been a baseball fan for 60 years (Tigers) and never been a Jays fan it has always driven me up the wall listening to the Jays and Buck Martinez who couldn't start a sentence without first saying "Yeah". I used to say that if you played a drinking game where you had to take a drink of alcohol every time Buck said Yeah you'd never make it past the second inning. Well now I can finally listen to a ballgame game again.

I've been a long time SXM fan and subscriber. However, as this last year's subscription was running out last month I once again called them to cancel.....as I've done every year.....unless they could give me the same plan for the same price....$5.99 a month. The best they could do was around $10 a month so I said no. They're selling a product that is a non-commodity.....a service.....if they don't sell it to me then it's not like they can just sell that one to someone else anyways. So for the first summer in a long while I'll use the radio or music on a USB or some other free service (WXYG - The Goat). What's really weird is that no one from SXM even called me back to try and get me to re-sign.....that's how much they cared.

Classic Rock radio stations don't do themselves any favours by sticking to a particular time period and here's why - there's nothing new for them to play. I've often thought....is "Classic Rock" a "time period", a "genre" or just a "radio station label". If it's only thought of as a time period then you're stuck playing only music from those particular years. If it's a radio station label then you can widen your selections to include New Wave - which many of those stations do by playing The Cars, The Police, Blondie, Elvis Costello and others. But if you're like me and think of Classic Rock as a genre of guitar oriented music then you could widen your playlist and appeal to include new artists. Something most "Classic Rock" radio stations have a hard time doing, and I don't know why. The music is there waiting to be played and yet they tend to shy away from the likes of Greta Van Fleet, Rival Sons, Dirty Honey, Crown Lands and others. Occasionally you might hear GVF but not often and I think it's a shame. How will they ever grow their audience or are they not concerned about that....that's probably the case.

On January 24th, the last host of CKCO-TV's Canadian Bandstand passed away, "Grantly" took over a struggling, uninteresting show and made it his own, bringing into the studio in Kitchener rock bands from across Canada. It was every high-schooler's dream to be seen dancing on TV on Saturday afternoons in the early 70's.
Larger than life, Grant was a force in the K-W area during his hay days.

| SOWNY » Looking for a 16mm film projector with Magnetic Audio capabilities » January 20, 2026 8:48 am |
Hopefully this request does not go against any website policies - but I'm doing it for "historic" purposes.
I'm looking to buy, borrow or if I have to steal a working 16mm film projector which will playback films with Magnetic audio. I already have 2 machines that have Optical audio....but I have a number of news films from CKCO-TV that were recorded with magnetic audio. These include a few of our Christmas Films, a documentary or two and a whole lot of other films that might have some historical significance to our area.
I follow Facebook Market Place as well as Kijiji religiously in hopes of finding such a machine, preferably a most recent (yea I know they don't make them anymore) model with audio out that I could go straight into a video camera with.
If you know anyone with such a machine I'd love to talk to them about what their plans are for it and whether it would fit into my budget - free would be ideal for my budget.
As an aside - does anyone know of someone who can fix 16mm projectors and who lives withing a short driving distance of K-W - I have a Eiki in need of someone to look at it.
Thanks All

My biased opinion - Twist and Shout should be higher than 14th.....and it's a joke that "Blinded by the Light" is 28th.....#1 in Canada and the USA and so many times better than Springsteen's original. "House of the Rising Sun" at #72 - who made this list and what were they smoking at the time? There's probably more like this but I gave up looking at this stupid list.

We (CKCO-TV) had a sportscaster actually say "Ni Pissing University". And of course the classic "Kaa Puss Kaa Sing" for Kapuskasing. And in Kitchener Waterloo you can always tell someone new to news in the area when they miss pronounce Weber (like Bieber) Street as Web-ber Street.

As long as I don't have to listen to Buck Martinez then anything is better....so yea I'm watching the Fox coverage. Captain Obvious is a master of telling you what you just saw but the fact that he can't start a sentence without saying "Yea" first drives me crazy...a drinking game where you have to just take a swallow of your beer when he says "Yea" every time would have you drunk by the third inning and passed out by the 5th. I know Jays fans love him but if you are an otherwise fan of baseball (not a blue kool-aid drinking fan) he teaches you almost nothing that you might not already know. Smoltz can be very dry and low key at times but he can give you insights that I never hear from Buck.

Following CFCA-FM's Fred Merritt's passing in August, the 864 King Street West gang in Kitchener has been hit by another 4 more retired employees who have gone to that big TV Studio in the sky. After Fred on August 24th, Willa McLean passed away on September 4th.....Willa was the wife of deceased Radio and Television personality Bob McLean. She co-produced "McLean and Company" on CKCO-TV. On September 14th, Su McKillop passed away. Su had been the Television Traffic Supervisor for a number of years before moving on to work at CTV in Toronto. We were all shocked to hear of the sudden ailment and death of Production Editor Joe Ulmer at just 70 years of age. There were few edited shows that came out of the Production Edit Suite that Joe did not play some part in editing. Just two days ago CKCO-TV News lost one of it's finest - Gary McLaren. (Webpage is being worked on with many pictures and videos to add on). Gary did it all over the years. In the 1950's he worked the newsroom, co-hosted a show called Gadabout, and was the host of Canadian Bandstand after Wally Crouter - Wally quit because it was interfering with his golf game. Besides reporting, Gary would go on to be the Assignment Editor, New Director and then the host of a very popular morning program - Sunday AM. Gary was 92 years old at the time of his passing.
This now makes 11 former employees of 864 King Street West in Kitchener who have died in 2025.....and there's still 3 months left.
