SOWNY » The future of local over the air TV » April 13, 2024 9:32 pm

There's always plenty of discussion in here of Toronto TV stations but not much talk abkut CHCH. I watch them for news, daily (because they're the closest to my house) on the Canadian side of the border, I also watch WGRZ (2) in the AM and CITY (57) from 11 PM, but CHCH is doing what many other stations just don't do: give local businesses and affordable(?) place to advertise on TV.  Sure, in Buffalo you'll see a handful of local ads, but do you really see any on and Bell or Rogers owned TV?

CHCH news director Greg O'Brien made a good point in one of their podcasts about being a station that doesn't have to answer to shareholders and only being focused on their broadcast area: Hamilton, Halton and Niagara. But are they profitable?  I'd like to think so.

As with these radio stations that Bell sold off perhaps the same is true for local TV:  Be more local.  If I'm going to see local commercials I don't mind seeing a low budget ad supporting my local TV.

The perfect example is that really  budget looking ad on Buffalo TV for Airport Plaza Jewelers.  "Just look for the big red awning"  --You see?  It works...probably cost em $100 to make!

Great show and well worth the watch.

I watched it back in January on the ITV X app.  Shocking to know it's true and still going on.

Just in the news last week...more was revealed that the government knew about this amd still did nothing.

SOWNY » President Of Evanov Communications Stresses On-Air Talent Over Music » April 9, 2024 9:17 pm

Tony Monaco has been with Evanov for THREE DECADES.

I stopped listening to Z about 14 months ago after Campanelli disappeared from the morning show without any word which is common practicein radio.

Being a listener of HOT 103...now Z103 since 1995 I know, from listening all those years that the average life of a morning show on that station is about 12 to 18 months.  (Personal opinion: I couldn't stand Sandra) So I stopped listening all together. I had heard their Noon and Drive at 5 mixes so often I knew what song was coming in next...like they were pre-recorded.

I went back to Sirius XM Hits 1 for my morning show fix.

Some other notable morning show hosts were Jesse Dillon (after AM640 went talk) and the late, great Don Berns.  I remember calling the station asking what happened to Don Berns on the morning show, because they'll never say on-air and I was told he was "in permanent vacation".

A couple of years ago I did email Paul Evanov after one of Bell's first round of cuts to thank them for not being owned by Bell and to show my appreciation for locally owned radio.  He responded rather quickly and thanked me for the kind words.

BBC Radio1 plays more new music and I can listen on the BBC sounds app so they're my replacement for Z103.

SOWNY » Would You Want To Watch An NHL Game With No Commentary? » March 18, 2024 9:40 am

An NFL game I was watching on CBS this past fall had a technical glitch with their audio for about 10 minutes where you couldn't hear the announcers...it even spilled into some of the dialog in the commercials as well.

At first it felt unusual; kind of strange: just the sounds of the stadium, but I realised don't mind the announcers: When I began watching football years ago, I learned quite a bit about rules, plays and penalties from them.

What would people think about no announcers during baseball?  Golf???

SOWNY » Bell Media Cuts 4,800 Jobs, Selling 45 Stations » February 8, 2024 10:57 am

I totally agree:  Bell is a cancer on the broadcast industry in this country. I wish they would just get out of the broadcast business all together.

Of course radio isn't what it once was or what it could be be cause BELL slowly dismantled it to the point where it has no soul.  Three St. Catharines radio stations were owned by Bell and they only had people in studio in the morning.   The rest was remote...to cut costs,  no doubt.

How is it that a company like Bell says the industry isn't profitable yet, smaller companies have set up new stations recently (1220 CFAJ and 88.5 CKLK)  Someone sees the potential.

SOWNY » U.S. TV Guide Informs Viewers About A New Innovation - A TV Antenna » January 28, 2024 1:15 pm

I've been using the same antenna for more than three decades. It's on a 30' tower with a rotor too.
Newer antennas are much smaller and pull in 45 to 55 channels in the Niagara region; all digital and of course, free.  I've installed many as a side hustle I used to have and you can use a small 4 bay (in most cases) to relieve everything from Buffalo, Hamilton and Toronto.

You can connect one single antenna up to as many as four TVs and watch four different channels at the same time.  There are DVR options available too.  (I've been using Tablo for about 8 or 9 years).

For best results, install your antenna outside.  Height does make a difference, but a tower isn't necessary:  a tripod in your roof with a mast will work just as well.  Just remember:  There is  NO SUCH THING AS AN HD ANTENNA. That's a marketing gimmick.

I watch the Superbowl every year and have the option to watch it on an American or Canadian channel...I'm sure you can guess which one I watch it on!

SOWNY » The new Trivago ad-bad lip synching » January 20, 2024 11:23 pm

I've seen other commercials where it's clearly obvious that the dialog is dubbed over the original.   The one example I can think of is a UK advert for some dishwasher cleaner.  There was a Canadian commercial that I saw on a UK channel dubbed over with people with British accents.  Cost savings is likely the primary reason.

SOWNY » Do You Subscribe To SiriusXM? You May Want To Read This » December 21, 2023 9:56 pm

I've been a customer since 2011.  I have three radios and I always call and "do the dance": Negotiate a deal or threaten to cancel.

They always give me the low price deal that I demand:  about  $4 or $5/month for one radi, but only for 12 months.  The other two I told them to shut off.  Then the love letters came in the mail.  I hold off...Each one offering a better deal than the last until one day an offer was seriously good: $6.99 per month until I cancel.   No need to call and negotiate every year.

Never had a problem with them.  I'm sure my account is flagged: "a**hole customer"  and I'm fine with that!

SOWNY » Famed Radio Consultant Bemoans The Current State Of The Medium » December 19, 2023 9:46 pm

What a great article

I gave up on North American radio a little more than a year ago and I'm really enjoying what I hear on BBC Radio1.

Aside from the morning shows on N. American radio, how many other programs have more than one DJ, or host?  On Radio1 during weekdays and some parts of the schedule during the weekends there are always two sometimes three hosts.

I was always under the impression that Radio1 was "stuffy" boy, was I wrong.  They suit my musical taste better than any other radio station ever has:  dance, drum & bass, rap, rock and alternative (they call it indie) all on one station and you can go from one end of the spectrum to the other in two songs.

I remember reading something about musical tastes in another thread in this forum...I hear new music from A LOT of artists I've never heard of before and sadly, many that you'll never hear on radio on this side of the pond.

Radio1 can introduce one to two to even three new songs PER DAY. It is so refreshing to hear such true variety, and new regional artists from around the UK on a regular basis.  I wish they'd do that more often here.

Sure Radio1 (and the BBC) is funded by the UK government and through a licensing scheme but if I had to, I WOULD pay for BBC sounds just to listen to their programming. North American radio should take notice, but sadly they won't.

I've listened to him on Boom since his first day.  I had listened to him on XL103 when he was filling in for someone.  I still have cassette tapes with him from his days on AM640 and he still sounds good...slowing down a bit, but then aren't we all? People are always calling in saying how surprised they are to hear him and glad he's back.  A down-to-earth guy.

SOWNY » Sim-Sub Now Being Used By Bell To Promote Sports Betting » December 3, 2023 7:53 pm

Hosts or personalities touting a product has been a "thing" as long as TV has existed.   The sports betting is annoying,  I'll agree to that.

With respect to sim-sub: It's the number one reason I only watch local TV with an antenna. I've never subscribed to Cable TV.  I'll choose the channel I want to watch, thanks.  I don't need it switched on me.

SOWNY » Would Having No Format Make For A Successful Radio Station? » December 3, 2023 12:00 pm

The kids not wrong.  I have music in my Spotify from the 50s, 60s & 70srock & roll & pop, even disco;  alternative from the 80s, dance & rave music from the 90s and new alt/rock and drum & bass from this year.

I believe it was an article shared in this forum about how LA's KIIS 102.7 was playing older top 40 songs along with newer music. They played "Love is a Battlefield" and thwn a newer song.  As recently as the 90s top 40 stations were more  rock, pop and hip-hop and the odd country tune, when compared to today.

Would I listen to a radio station that played a much MUCH wider variety of music?  Definitely. At a time where radio stations need listeners why not try a no format 'format'?  The problem is:  most radio stations are owned by big faceless conglomerates that wouldn't take the financial risk.

I think the closest radio station that already plays a very wide variety of music is Boom 97.3

SOWNY » New CHCH tower... » October 13, 2023 8:04 am

Still glitchy here in St. Catharines.   The signal breaks up, pauses for a couple of seconds every few minutes or so, about a dozen times an hour.  I never had any problems like this before last Friday.

I've sent CHCH an email about it.

SOWNY » Happy birthday "Talk" 640 » October 11, 2023 9:18 pm

I listened to AM640 when they plated music.  Jesse & Gene in the morning until 9, then talk until noon (The Midday Meltdown: the top 12 at 12) then more talk at 1 until Tarzan Dan came on at 3.  Then in '95 the talk portion was expanded by an hour and Dan didn't come on until 4.  I listened on my Walkman while I delivered newspapers.  When I was told AM640 was going all talk I recorded as much as I could including Tarzan Dan's final hour of his last show.  I messaged him and told him that a few months ago.  He told me even HE doesn't have his last show on tape.

I hope to soon digitize them from cassette tape: in all their crackly squealing AM glory.

SOWNY » New CHCH tower... » October 8, 2023 2:03 pm

I'm in Merritton and didn't have to re-aim my stationary 4 bay (pulling in 45 channels), the rotary antenna is 32 years old and pulls in 53 channels (its able to get WBBZ from Buffalo) I wouldn't have noticed any change if it wasn't for the signal cutting out here and there.  Thanks to this forum that's where I learned CHCH was about to make the switch to their new tower.

SOWNY » New CHCH tower... » October 6, 2023 7:16 pm

I'm in St. Catharines using a directional UHF/VHF/FM antenna for two TV's and a newer 4 bay UHF on another.  Both sit atop a 30' tower.  Yesterday (the 5th) and today I've noticed some tiling (the picture breaking up) and then it pauses for a couple of seconds. While watching the news it probably happened here and there over the course of an hour about a dozen times. After some troubleshooting,  I've concluded this 'glitch' is coming from CHCH. Has anyone else noticed this as well? And are they still making adjustments?

SOWNY » Britain's Channel 4 Comes To North American Streaming » September 6, 2023 9:43 pm

Through the "magic of the internet" I watch THE Channel 4...alot.  A British public broadcaster with great programming and a nightly newscast that makes North American news outlets look like they air nothing but soft puff stories.  One of their most popular and multi award winning shows: Gogglebox never really took off here: In Canada: "The people's couch" and in the U.S. "Celebrity watch party" an American version of the summer replacement: Celebrity Gogglebox, I'll make a point to watch it live with the rest of the U.K., otherwise I'll stream it the next day.  It's a shame this streaming channel isn't actually Channel 4 or their free streaming service (the largest in the U.K. as they advertise it) but it's a start.  Now if only we could get it in Canada.

SOWNY » Why Oldies Stations Might Be Showing Us The Future Of Radio » September 6, 2023 9:26 pm

I was just in L.A. last week and while in a 7-Eleven with KIIS playing in the store, I know KIIS is a top 40 station but in between two new pop songs they played "Hit me with your best shot" by Pat Benetar.  Perhaps they're experimenting already.

SOWNY » CKLK 88.5 Grimsby Testing » August 3, 2023 8:35 pm

I tuned in to 88.5 in my truck this morning and it was a little fuzzy here and there in St. Catharines.

The HD indicator came on but their signal is too weak to pull in full HD.  In the house, I'm using a 90s era VHF/UHF/FM antenna aimed west (towards Grimsby/Beamsville) on a 30 ft tower.  It comes in fine, but it would be nice to be able to receive this station all over the Niagara Region.

Good music variety (even if most of the music is older than me--nothing wrong with that, either!)

The best thing about CKLK:  They're not owned by Bell!
