I can't remember the last time I listened to CHUM-FM, if ever, but I'll be tuned in Wednesday morning to hear the end of an era. It's Roger Ashby's last day doing mornings after more than three decades at 104.5 and half a century at the station. They're doing a live broadcast from The Sheraton Centre and promise a lot of broadcasting types dropping by to pay tribute to the longtime host.
This is not only historic for Ashby, but also for radio itself in this city. Given how the industry has changed, it's very unlikely that anyone else will ever achieve 50 years on air working for the exact same company all that time.

John Moore signed off on CFRB half an hour early this morning to run down and join the Rogerfest.
Did not listen. Couldn't. So......how was it ? What happened ?

Heard the last 90 minutes. Among the guests (by phone) was the reclusive Rick Moranis, who used to work with Ashby when both hosted shows on CHUM. There were letter or audio greetings from an eclectic group that included Ryan Seacrest, Rick Hodge, Mike Myers, John Tory (who proclaimed Dec. 5 "Roger Ashby Day") and Justin Trudeau.
Members of The Arkells also performed live, doing a version of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark."
The last 20 minutes, which ran well into the next hour, involved personal live farewells from 33-year producer Tom Jokic, co-hosts Jamar McNeil and Marilyn Denis, with the final 10 minutes or so coming from Ashby himself. As of this post, nothing on their website as yet, which still lists Roger, Marilyn and Jamar as the morning crew.

Caught Roger come on his sidekick's Marilyn Denis Show for a short interview and they went over when they started together at CHUM, his first song ever played back on 1050 and the Chum Chart back in the late 60s when he started.. Was quite a legend it seems!
