I read another article in which Rogers gleefully announced that they were hiring. Sadly, they also announced that those being laid off did not possess the skill set for these new positions.

“Let’s buy out Bell’s share of MLSE then layoff staff that we actually still need but will split the workload with remanding staff, like we did with Citytv.” How about them Jays?

Am I correct in hearing Steve Roberts was one of the casualties at 680?

If Steve Roberts is one of the casualties, that would be sad. He's one of the better ones.

It certainly sounds like the business editors were laid off. Other than Mike Eppel during the morning show, there haven't been business editors doing the updates at :26 and :56 past the hours since yesterday. The news anchors have been doing those themselves.

Nobody gets "laid off" in radio.
Laid off suggests they might be brought back if economics allow.
They are fired.

Were the segments canned altogether, or just voice by someone other?  I know Ari Rabinovitch was one of them, so I hope he was spared.

Seemed to be not long ago that 680 was one of those few AM stations that made its own money, but I really worry about its future.  To me, it was one of the few ways that AM radio could justifiably continue to exist.  We'll see I guess.

It's still a cash-cow. But that's not good enough for shareholder capitalism; if you're not growing, you're shrinking. For every drop in revenue, there must be a drop in expenses. Eventually cutting those expenses brings down revenue, and the death-spiral begins. Every public company will eventually eat itself.

Quite a sharp contrast to when they first started out with the format:

"Tony Viner was president of Rogers radio at the time and said he had some anxiety about whether the change would be a success.

“It really was an exciting time,” says Viner. ” (But) I was nervous and apprehensive.”

Sanderson says Ted Rogers never had any doubts about the new format’s success.

“Tony said ‘what would you think about switching 680 to all news? You’d lose about $7 million a year for five years,'” recalled Sanderson. “Ted said ‘I’d go for that, sure.'” "

The business segments are basically voiced by the news anchors now. I haven't heard Ari Rabinovitch or Kris McCusker, who also did the business segments, in the last two days.

I don't think this is up to date, but for what it's worth:

I only recognize 12 names on that list.

Steve Roberts has been missing this week. Though Catherine Jette was in and out this week.  Maybe a heavy cold is circulating?

Honestly the bio for the cast can be slow with the update. However when James Munroe, Sladjana T and James Mackin left, the bio page was updated immediately.

On a superficial note, it really irks me when lists are alphabetized by first names rather than last!

Not superficial, especially from a news outlet, reflects on their organizational skills somewhat!

Agreed, but possibly accommodating listeners looking for the biography?  Quite a few might be looking for 'Martin Whatshisname'.  I had a foreman who was name challenged, constantly sending our maintenance workers out to see 'Whatshisname' on #6 crane. 😁
