This isn't local, but you can hear it here - or anywhere in the world. It's a unique online radio station run by people who love the music and the medium. It's called homegrwonradionj, and it's based in a small town in New Jersey.

The secret sauce - the disc jockeys, who each pay $50 a month for the privilege of being on air and helping to pay the costs. Part of the format is old school 70s FM, but they also feature every other genre you can imagine, including one show called "Mozart to Motorhead."

Hosts come from all over the world, but there's also a local feel, with people coming by the "store" to chat with the on-air locals, often in the middle of a show.

"Occasionally I get people who bang on the window," said Jerry Balderson, one of the 30-plus hosts...a unique online "radio" station that is celebrating its 20th year of reinventing classic radio for the digital age.

"The other day an old friend of mine came by," he said. "I put on a long track, went to the door, and engaged."

If any of this intrigues you or you're curious, you can tune in at homegrownradionj.com. The schedule is, if nothing else, pretty eclectic.

I think this is a great concept. Maybe the next time a radio station comes up for sale, we should buy it and start a station like this in Canada! Who’s with me?!

The fact it's actually survived for 20 years is impressive.
