CHCH IS doing the 11pm newscast tonight after earlier saying it wouldn't do so, because of the same medical emergency.

Why, why, why would they put that on the scroll??
"Due to unavoidable issues" or "Due to circumstances..." would have been better. I was waiting for the stream on CHCH's youtube page, since I don't have cable, but left after a few minutes of nothing airing.

They announced this on the CHCH fan group on Facebook with the head of the page asking people not to speculate on who had the issue. I just wonder why one person, if that's who is affected, would shut down the whole show.

CHCH aired an abbreviated 11 PM newscast that looped for the hour. At the top of the show, the news director announced that a behind-the-scenes person had a medical emergency and passed away.

Condolences to that person's family and colleagues at the station.

The only person I could think of that could prevent a live TV show from going to air if they were absent is the control room director.

From what ND Greg O'Brien said in the brief video, whoever it was that passed away was a beloved member of the newsroom staff.

This was the lead story on the Toronto Star's website Saturday night, although it doesn't contain any clues about who passed away.

This is Reddit, so your mileage may vary, but someone on this thread said that it was the 6pm news director who died.

CHCH did the right thing...a news team/crew is more than the anchors and weather people...they are just a piece of it...the folks behind the camera are every bit as important and need to be acknowledged as well....a person died on set and you shouldn't simply 'go on with the show'.

Tonight, CHCH had a montage of photo's of their late colleague.
I don't know how long CHCH keep their streams up, but for now, you can see it at the end of the video in the link:
