This is the date CBS ended the broadcasts of their final seven radio daytime dramas. Ma Perkins, Young Dr. Malone, The Right To Happiness, The Second Mrs. Burton, The Couple Next Door, Whispering Streets and Best Seller. Television had wiped out most of the primetime radio series. Gunsmoke [with William Conrad] would last until 1961 while [Your's Truly] Johnny Dollar would end in 1962. Of the soap's, Ma Perkins is the only one I remember. My mother and grandmother were avid listeners. They also both used the sponsor's product, Oxydol Laundry Soap. While the radio drama is all but forgotten in North America, it is very much alive and well in Britain. The Archers has been running on various BBC channels since 1951. [BBC 4 since 1967] Episodes run 12 minutes. The North American radio soaps didn't have much new material in each 15 minute episode. Each episode had a one minute recap of yesterday's episode, a one minute preview of tomorrow's episode. plus a couple of 60 second ads. So when CBS debuted two 30 minute television soaps in April 1956 [As The World Turns/Edge of Night] that was huge news.

One of the funniest 'Goon Show' episodes (The Spanish Suitcase) commenced with the studio audience bolting the theatre upon the announcement of the show's title.  Neddie Seagoon immediately lures the crowd back by having the theme music from 'The Archers' played. 😁
