On a remarkable interview on Thursday, Global's political reporter Mercedes Stephenson reveals she's been repeatedly harassed and threatened by a stalker, who made her life miserable and led her to fear for her safety.

In a candid Q&A on AM640, she told host Greg Brady that the man, who was a complete stranger and became obsessed with her by seeing her on TV, was eventually arrested and convicted on the charge, but got out of jail early, leaving her fearing it would start all over again.

The man in question has also done this to other women and has been in trouble for this kind of behaviour before. And she says he's still threatening her and has not learned his lesson.

She says she decided to come forward with her story, now that she's expecting a child and as a warning to other women.

In addition to her coverage of politics in Ottawa, Stephenson hosts "The West Block" every Sunday morning on Global.

When criminals involved in multiple gun violence events get automatic bail, it is a given this guy will get bail every time. I have always maintained that until a son or daughter of a prominent politician is shot, sadly nothing will change with our current bail system.

I recall a few years ago, Morgan Hoffman, who used to work on ET Canada and is now the entertainment reporter for Global's morning show, also said that she had to go to court to testify against someone who was stalking her.

Women already face a lot of sexism in the TV industry, it's sad that they have to put up with this frightening harassment as well.

It's not just women. I well recall the story about former City TV anchor Gord Martineau having a female stalker.

She would show up at the station at 299 Queen St. W. after the 6 PM news, hoping to catch him leaving for the night. Sometimes she'd bring him cakes or baked goods, other times she just wanted to talk to him. I guess the biggest difference between the two cases was that he didn't consider her a threat, per se, just a gigantic nuisance who never stopped coming.

I believe he eventually had a restraining order issued against her, which thankfully put an end to it. But even if it's not life threatening, it can be very unsettling.

David Letterman was also troubled by a female stalker. Back in the 80s, a schizophrenic woman named Margaret Ray was obsessed with him, and broke into his house. Some years later she took her own life.
