Leafs Radio Game Airing On 680 News, Due To 590's Jays Commitment

It had to happen eventually - a Leaf game that wasn't TSN1050's to take, but had to air somewhere in Toronto. With the Fan having its commitment to airing every Jays game, what could be the final match of the first round of the playoffs had to air somewhere.

Turns out it will be on 680, the other Rogers AM station, with the news wheel continuing on its online feed. It's been a while since this had been the case, but given the overlap, it was inevitable.

Heard this yesterday and wondered why it wouldn't be on TSN1050...who appears to be running "best ofs" this evening. But with Rogers buying Bell's stake in MLSE, 1050 should cease being an option soon enough.

I hate this. It's already annoying enough that Leafs and Raptors are split between 2 stations, now they throw a 3rd into the mix (and sometimes 4, the occasional Raptors game will air on 1010 if 1050 is airing a Leafs game). And all because the blue and red managers can't decide who gets to play with the toy in the sandbox... just give it to 1050 already!

I'm not privy to exactly how it's arranged, but there's a specific number of games that are divided between each station in advance. Some are TSN1050's (i.e. Bell) and some are The Fan's (i.e. Rogers.) Each gets what each gets, regardless of whether one of their schedules is too crowded. And they can't "trade" when the other station has a different commitment.

TSN1050 will have Game 6 on Thursday night, if necessary.

I'm guessing most here are hoping it won't be.

I'm assuming it's because the companies have separately pre-sold all the sponsorship elements

I'm not privy to exactly how the contract works either. But if 1050 gets an extra game this round, why can't 590 get an extra game next round... or a couple extra regular season games next year?

Maybe I'm old school, but I don't think upper management should be significantly impacting the end user experience.

Yeah maybe you're right. Maybe the sponsor contract only stipulates the spots will air during a leafs broadcast with no mention of what actual station the game will air on. If I were a sponsor, I'd be annoyed my spots were pushed off to a station that doesn't normally air Leaf games.

this is about 1050. 1050 should be soled to CHIN and 1540 should be takein off the air or be soled to another ethnic broadcaster like the owners of CJRK or akash broadcasting.

Years ago, when the CKO news network wanted to include Leaf games in their schedule, they had to get approval from CRTC.

After all is said and done, more is usually said than done.

CKO in Ottawa carried the Expos but could only carry so many in a row and so many a week.  I remember when CKO outbid CKFH for the Leaf rights.  So, getting permission from the CRTC is probably right.

Red Sox 10 - Jays 2
Senators 4 - Leafs 0

Guess it really didn’t matter who covered the games.  A turd sandwich is still a turd sandwich.

After the Ottawa short handed goal, the look on the faces of Leaf fans was priceless. OMG! It's starting to happen again. Senators are playing with house money in game six. They weren't expected to win the series, never mind two games. If this series goes seven games and the Leafs lose, they will be the only NHL team in league history to win a series after being down 3-0 [1942] AND lose a series after being up 3-0. This would hurt much more than the game seven in Boston where they blew a three goal lead with less than 8 minutes remaining in the third period.

I can't think of a franchise more deserving of such a record.
