Stupid, arrogant people who don't check pronunciations.  Lazy, too.

Agreed! Here in Eastern Ontario, we have at least a couple of those in the Junior A CCHL (Central Canada Hockey League) who call games on HockeyTV, Cogeco/YourTV or on local radio, and one in particular just plain doesn't care - he'll even butcher the names of players on his own team! Some others are Algonquin College radio students or recent alumni, but regardless, take the time to ask.

I do PA for one CCHL team, and when a new player comes along and I'm not sure about the pronunciation of his name, I'll ask him, and then pass it along to our broadcast commentators. When I get the rosters for visiting teams, I'll see if there are any names I'm not sure about, and try to track down someone from that team if necessary. Failing that, I'll replay one of that team's home games on HockeyTV's VOD and hear how their play-by-play announcer says the name(s).

Don Cherry made a career of being too arrogant to learn most names in the NHL.
