Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating

Football interrupted my usual choice for a 6 o'clock newscast on Sunday, so I reluctantly tuned into Global instead. It's never been my favourite news choice and seeing its weather forecast has done nothing to change that. The problem? The anchor, in this case Minna Rhee - who is not a weather person - continually stands right in front of all the graphics, making them impossible to see.

Want to know tomorrow's high temperature? Hope she moves out of the way and shows you. Otherwise you won't get a glimpse of it. Need to see what's going on later in the week? Maybe you'll see the predicted highs and lows, maybe you won't. Whoever designed the new graphics made them full screen and very wide. So unless the presenter steps out of the way or out of frame, you simply cannot see what the forecast temperature will be. Why do they keep doing this?

I've seen something similar on City TV as well, where the "weather specialist" (i.e. not a meteorologist) does a futurecast, that's supposed to show weather systems moving in with an approx. time count as to when to expect rain, clearing, sun etc. But it's so poorly designed that the anchor stands in front of the clock and the viewer can't see anything. Is the rain predicted for noon? 6 PM? Four in the morning? Who knows, because there's a person in the way.

Why bother presenting this information if you won't let viewers see it? It's frustrating and pointless. And they need to fix it pronto, since this info will become even more vital once winter sets in.

There are a lot things CTV News could do better, but at least their weather graphics are designed to show you the information - and not block it.

Here's a perfect example of what I'm referring to. What are the early temperature predictions for next Saturday and Sunday? We don't know, because she never gets out of the way to show the viewer. Yes, they're notoriously wrong that far out. But if you're going to show it, show it. Blocking it just makes viewers angry. Why even put it up if we can't see it?

Back in the '90s on CFTO, when the regional short-term forecasts came on during the weather segment, the reporter (Dave Devall, Steve Jacobs etc.) would walk out of the chroma key shot as the first forecast graphics slid onto the screen. I agree that the reporter should get out of the shot, at least for a few seconds, so that the entire forecast can be seen.

Reading this I have a faint but real memory of being a child watching black and white tv and during the news, seeing the weather report, it was a guy in a suit in front of a large stand-alone chalkboard, he'd hold a piece of chalk and scribble a sun or cloud, rain, snowflake and the current temperature on the chalkboard then flip the chalkboard over to do the forecast for tomorrow and later in the week... I feel old.

Re: Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating

CTV London uses a green screen for the forecast graphics and it's not so bad but sometimes Julie Atchison will sometimes get in the way of the 7 Day Forecast. Same for CTV Windsor weather guy Gary Archibald who is seen sometimes on CTV London when Julie is away. Gary will usually stand in the middle of the screen at the end of each weather forecast.
CTV Kitchener on the other hand has a video board instead of a green screen. But during the 7 day forecast part the CTV Kitchener logo bug is sometimes in the way at the bottom right of the screen but other than that it's not that bad at all.
Here is what CTV Kitchener's looks like

When Jay Campbell was on CFPL, he was always really good about getting out of the shot. As soon as the 5-day came on, he was walking away from the green screen and back to the desk. If I recall correctly Dave Macdonald on CKCO also did that.

I remember Jay Campbell doing the weather on A News London. What I liked about the weather graphics from A News London is that they showed CGI landmarks around London Like UWO, John Labatt Center, (Now know as Budweiser Gardens) and the covent garden market. But when they rebranded as CTV 2 in 2011 they no longer use the CGI landmarks they today just use viewer submitted photos instead during the forecasts.

CJOH (CTV Ottawa) still does something like that for part of their short-term forecast for the Ottawa area... CGI versions of the Centre Block/Peace Tower, the National Gallery of Canada etc., created as part of the station's WSI weather graphics package. In Toronto, Citytv's forecasts even had a basic 2D form of CGI landmarks (e.g. the CN Tower) in the '80s, likely when David Onley was still on weather duty... one popular graphics system at the time was the Colorgraphics LiveLine series, and I believe they were the ones that would create those custom skylines.

Re: Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating

As is often the case with most TV weather forecasts I watch (lots of bells and whistles) and afterward I find myself saying "great...but what's the weather"!?

Re: Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating

Agree with all comments but what is even more infuriating is the Weather channel going to regional forecasts in smaller markets. Communities that once had 2 minutes of specific in depth coverage now get short 15 second rotational useless info-hits lumped in with 3 other areas. The Weather Channel has gone from a must see to a who cares in our household.

Re: Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating

I agree with radiodazewarrior that the Weather Network has gone downhill.
Seems I must watch several minutes of semi-interesting, often useless "special features" before I can get a incomplete forecast for my area which lasts no longer than a half minute.  They lost me as a regular viewer.
As for other forecasters: get the hell out of the way please!

Re: Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating

The U.S. Weather Channel does spectacular coverage of hurricanes, tornados and snow storms. They actually name their snow storms and blizzards.
