Extra out, Freq in in Peterborough

Re: Extra out, Freq in in Peterborough

The MyFM station claims it did two separate surveys to see what holes there were in the market and this came up in both of them. It will feature songs from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots & the Foo Fighters.

And as always, there's a launch stunt. From the website:

"‘Alternative Rewind freq 90.5’, which is owned and operated by My Broadcasting Corporation, is in the midst of playing 10,000 straight songs."

‘Alternative Rewind freq 90.5’ launches in Peterborough

Is this going to take a bite out of the Wolf?

Yes.

Classic Alternative is a quick burnout format though.

They’d better improve their signal,or nobody is going to hear them.

The Wolf was once unstoppable but a combination of increased competition and some programming misfires have hurt their numbers in recent years. Recently they were playing mostly newer and heavier rock to distinguish themselves from Oldies 96.7 whose playlist includes a lot of classic rock-ish tunes. in the last little while they seemed to have pulled back slightly and reintroduced more of the tried and true to the mix. Classic alternative may eat at the lower end of the Wolf's demo but the format isn't going to have quite as wide an appeal.
That said, MY  knew they had to make a change and the last time they did that with a station in the market they came up with Oldies which has been a consistent leader almost from the start. That was done  after extensive research as was this so there is potential. However, as has been mentioned here, the one big drawback 90.5 faces is a relatively weak signal.

In the Spring 2020 ratings, Oldies96.7 had a 15.9 share. The WOLF had a 8.4. 90.5 had a 0.5. They were even beaten by Cobourg's Classic Rocker at 107.9 with a 1.5.

Well, also, The Wolf has been sold and resold.
I forget who originally put Wolf on the air, but I do know it was owned by Power Broadcasting at one point, then later sold to Corus, which owns Q 107.  For a short while, both Q and Wolf shared the exact same playlist. (along with BIG FM, etc) Hopefully that has stopped happening.

So basically, 90.5 FM is a station that has nowhere else to go but up! lol

I wonder what contests they'll  try doing now.
They already had some interesting ones with the old format, including this one:

There is nothing like hearing Tragically Hip "Bobcaygeon" in Bobcaygeon

That's been possible for a long time as both The Wolf and Oldies play it and that's how it will remain. 90.5's signal doesn't reach Bobcaygeon.

I found the signal imperfect in the car even in parts of Peterborough. I can hear it a bit past Bobcaygeon when the antenna is pointed right and when the constellations reveal themselves (and align) one star at time.
