The thread on smoke tropo had me scanning the FM band on Thursday morning, just to see what was there. I couldn't get anything specific, but I did notice something very odd that's not likely related to distant stations. There is some kind of odd carrier current at 90.0 FM.
Yes, 90.0, a frequency that isn't really possible in North America. It's not at 90.1 or 89.9. Just 90.0. There's no sound, music or anything else. But there's definitely some kind of signal there. Has anyone else heard this and do you have any idea what it is?
I've gotten lots of DX reception over the years, but never one that's way off frequency. Not sure how long this will last, so if you're curious you should check it out sooner than later and see if you can detect a signal.

Could be something very local. Have you noticed it anywhere beyond your own property?

Haven't tried that yet. I can say it's not very strong, but it shows up on my signal strength meter at about a 3, which is not high. But it does prove something is there. Without any audio, though, it's doubtful I'll ever really know what it is or who's behind it.

There's probably no "who." Any number of electrical devices can cause this.

I use this low power FM transmitter to broadcast my SXM around the house and out in the yard.
On the car radio I can hear it up to about a half block away.
I keep it tuned to 90.1, an unused frequency around London. But it can be tuned to any frequency, including an off channel like 90.0.
Maybe one of your neighbours is doing something like that.

Possibly. But you'd think there would be some kind of audio to go along with the signal. Who broadcasts nothing? (Insert CFRB and 640 jokes here...)

Could be they just keep it powered up all the time even when they are not inputting anything.
My neighbour told me they get this nice station on their radio with Frank Sinatra. But it isn't on all the time.
I don't disclose to them the source, since I have illegally modified my unit to increase the power.
